Learning to driveis a big step towards being an adult. But teens are not adultsyet and need time to learn to drive with less risks. In Arkansas, teens are dying in car crashes at rates two times that ofthe United States. Safe driving skills can protect teens andothers on the road with them. Why are teens at risk? They are new drivers and do not have a lot of practice driving. The crashrate per mile for a 16-year-old driver is two times that of an 18–or19-year-old driver.Teens also like to take risks and think they know more than they do.Not wearing a seat belt:In 2006, half of the teens who died in a car crash were not wearing theirseatbelt.Driving at night:In 2004, almost half of the motor vehicle crashes where teens have diedwere at night.Passengers:Teens are more likely to crash with passengers in the car. Twopassengers in the car double the risk of a crash.Speeding:Speeding makes it harder for a driver to steer safely around curves orobjects in the road. Speeding is the main reason for one-third of all fatalcrashes.Cell phones:The risk of having a crash is four times higher when the driver is on thecell phone. Text messaging is very dangerous because you have to lookaway from the road.Impaired driving:Protect the lives of others —If you have been drinking or doing drugs atall, DO NOT drive.Protect your life—Do not get in the car with anyone who has beendrinking or doing drugs.Other things which cause teens to not pay attention to the road includeeating, drinking, changing the radio station, and changing the airtemperatures.
