Following isanother quote from his diary:“To ‘believe in God’ is to believe in yourself, as selfevident,as ‘illogical’, and as impossibleto explain: if I can be, then God is.”Hammarskjöld believed that “something” was leading hislife. He wrote in his diary in 1961:“I don’t know Who--or what--put the question, I don’tknow when it was put. I don’t even rememberanswering. But at some moment I did answer Yes toSomeone--or Something--and from that hour I wascertain that existence is meaningful and that, therefore,my life, in self-surrender, had a goal.”It is obvious that Hammarskjöld was not surrendered tothe God of the Bible. He was blindly surrendered to the“god of this world.”U ThantU Thant*, who was UN Secretary General from 1961 to1971, was a Buddhist who meditated every morningbefore driving to the headquarters building.
