Theoutdoors is in our blood. We don’tsay that lightly. The LOWA brand wasborn in 1923 in the foothills, created by acobbler who built hob-nailed boots forlocal farmers and herders. Dear LOWA,I bought my LOWA Renegades in 1999 and went to the Amazonwith my son’s science class. Since then I have traveledextensively, all over the world, for work. In one year I traveledto six of the seven continents, excluding Antarctica.One day at the Great Wall of China I remembered the portraitI had taken of my old workboots when I was in the 5thgrade in the early 70s. I had forgotten to bring the subject Iwanted to shoot, so I shot my LOWA boots. I decided that Iwould shoot those boots when I traveled to interesting placesso I could display the pictures on my wall.Meanwhile, Cisco has sent me to Bejing, Sydney, Prague,Munich, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and most cities in Western Europe.The other two photos I have sent [to LOWA] were from ProvincetownMass. And from Bonnaroo, a music festival in Tenn.last June where the boots were probably tested as much asany other time. It rained 4-6 inches in 24 hours and turned thefields to mud 6-10 inches deep. My Renegades came throughwith flying colors! I loved slopping through the flood and themud knowing my feet would stay dry. I was offered knee-highrubber boots and just laughed. I stayed dry and comfortable.I love these shoes. They fit like glove from the first day Itried them on. I wear them year round. They are the best allaround shoe I’ve ever worn. They are the shoes I wear for dayhikes in all weather and conditions. They are my first choicewhen I tour cities around the world. They are my winter bootsin the snow and my mud boots in the spring. I also bought a backpack. Fromthat point, I left the U.S. on an 18-month around-theworldtrip that spanned from the jungles of Fiji to the icepacks of New Zealand, to the deserts of Uzbekistan. You guys are the best!Sincerely,Derek P.LOWA,I was looking for a light, Gore-Tex boot thatholds a crampon, has some insulation forwarmth and climbs well for summer guiding.I picked the Mountain Expert GTX boot and,as always, right off the shelf it was ready towear and get down to business. I wore themall season for many climbs. For example, lastyear I wore them 6 times on the Matterhorn, 8times on the Eiger and twice on Mt. Blanc to justname a few peaks. In fact, on the full Mittellegiridge on the Eiger I had to climb two full pitchesof UIAA 6 or 5.9 in the GTX because somebodysandbagged me. But they did it. Even though Iwas glad it was over and climbing shoes wouldhave been better, I managed and was glad thatthe GTX’s did the trick in a pinch.
