Volume 5, Issue 3 March 2013It seems hard to imagine that the grass was turning green by this point lastyear. We are only three weeks out from the kick-off of the 2013 GatewayPGA season at the Quad Pro Event presented by Cutter & Buck. Now goingon my fifth year in St. Louis, I’ve become accustom to how fast the weathercan change. For all of us, I am hopeful for sunny skies and green fairwaysin the near future. This month’s e-newsletter has a lot of great content and opportunities toget involved with the section. We are well inside 100 days until the 74thplaying of the Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid. With that in mind, we havea nice article from Jason Mengel, 74th Sr. PGA Championship Director, and he will continue toupdate us through June. Along those same lines, we have an update on the PGA volunteersituation. We are so thankful to all of our PGA Professionals who have put their hands up tovolunteer. We still have some spots open but we are making great progress. Michael Bechert ofNike Golf has really stepped up to sponsor our volunteer uniform. We will also take care oflunch for each of our Gateway PGA volunteers. There will be additional consumer volunteeropportunities that lead up to the week of the Championship. We are currently securing theseopportunities but are looking at Busch Stadium and similar locations to host these events.I wanted to also give a quick update on PGA REACH (Recreation, Awareness, Community, andHealth). The Gateway PGA and Bellerive Country Club challenged the idea that the PGA ofAmerica could create greater community impact by leveraging their championships. Acollaboration between the Gateway PGA, Bellerive, and the PGA of America looks toaccomplish just that. The creation of this initiative is a major reason why the PGA of Americachoice St. Louis two of our upcoming championships. Further, the PGA of America will betaking this initiative national at all of their future championships. The goal of our local PGAREACH initiative is to keep kids in school and to graduate young productive citizens intosociety. We have partnered with St. Louis public schools, Urban K-Life, Big Brothers/BigSisters of Eastern Missouri, and the Boys & Girls Club of Greater St. Louis. To be successful,we must utilize the game of golf by involving our PGA Professionals and our local amateurplayers/facilities. Programs are underway that incentivize at risk St Louis youth for being partof PGA REACH. Successful youth participants will gain summer internships, mentors, golfopportunities, and most importantly, a clearer vision of what it takes to be successful in life.Through PGA REACH, we also look to create an inner-city golf park that can be the breedinggrounds for St. Louis public school golf teams – something that is unfortunately absent at thistime. A lot more information is to come but I encourage you to get involved with this growingoutreach. Feel free to contact Ali Wells or myself for more information or ways that you canhelp make a difference. All the best,Spring Meeting &ActivitiesThis IssueP2Growth of the Game P 3Assistant’s Corner P 4Rules Corner P 4Education Corner P 5Membership Notes P 5Tournament News P 6Gateway PGA Golf Day P 7Employment Corner P 8Senior PGA Champ P 9Fitness P 10Upcoming Tournaments P 11Member Updates P 12Scholarship P 13Section OfficersJoe Schwent, PGAPresidentNathan Charnes, PGAVice-PresidentBenjiman Kent, PGASecretaryGateway PGA StaffJosh Riley, PGAExecutive DirectorSteve Finn, PGAAssistant Executive DirectorAlex AndersonDirector or Junior GolfAli Jean Wells, PGAGrowth of the Game andProgram DirectorLindsay RileyFoundation Admin AssistantSusan BenderMembership1

Rule 26-1 is the water hazard rule. If a player does nothave knowledge or virtual certainty that a ball not found is in awater hazard the player cannot assume the ball is in the hazard. The ball must be considered lost somewhere other thanthe water hazard and the player must proceed under Rule 27-1.The same is true if a ball has not been found and the playerwants to proceed under Rule18-1 (ball moved by an outsideagency), Rule 24-3 (ball lost in an obstruction), or Rule 25-1c(ball lost in an abnormal ground condition). On many occasions I have been in situations when players aresearching for ball. They look in the lateral water hazard butalso in tall grass or wooded areas outside the hazard.Obviously if they are searching in these other areas there is notknowledge or virtual certainty the ball is in the water hazard. At the end of five minutes the player then wants to drop a balltwo club lengths from the point where the ball last crossed themargin of the lateral water hazard. I have to tell the player he/she has to proceed under Rule 27-1and incur the penalty of stroke anddistance. If a player were to proceed underRule 26-1 he/she would be playingfrom a wrong place and incur a twostroke penalty in stroke play or aloss of hole penalty in match playunder Rule 20-7. Since the correctprocedure required a stroke anddistance penalty in most cases this would be a serious breachof Rule 20-7c in stroke play and the player would bedisqualified if the error was not corrected as prescribed inRule 20-7c.To learn more about "known or virtually certain" readDecisions 26-1/1 and 26-1/1.34

The PGA of America assists us in organizing and populating the facility and member sections based on the information they have intheir database. We hope that your information is listed correctly because it was taken directly from the updates done by members andapprentices when their employment and contact information is updated in PGA Links. If you have any problems getting it done in Linksyou can call the office and I will help. This year we are very excited to announce that the entire calendar will be available in digital form on the GPGA website. You will be ableto find it easily and use it as a resource along with the printed calendar. A big plus for adding the calendar to the website is that we will beable to update information throughout the year. The digital calendar is another important reason to keep your employment informationcurrent. We will have the MSR cycle and requirements posted on the website inside the calendar. As always there will be ample educationopportunities offered plus many ways to earn credits through participating in section and foundation activities. The PGA of America now processes all payments the section makes to facilities, vendors, members and apprentices. They require a W-9form from all facilities and vendors with payments due from the section. If your facility has never hosted a section activity I will send a W-9 form to be completed and returned. This is a one-time requirement; the completed forms are kept on file here and at the PGA. Membersand apprentices do not need to fill out a form. The 2013 calendar presented a couple of challenges not facedby the Section in recent years as the 2013 Sr PGA Championship comes to BelleriveCC in May. After some juggling of dates and venues, all of the traditional Pro-Amshave been retained, all Majors are scheduled, and there will be one less Pro-Openthan 2012. The biggest change is the moving of the Pro-Ladies to a Tuesday, June25th, at St. Clair CC. Please make plans early to attend this event as we are goingback to a single 10 am shotgun start and with Tuesday being "Ladies Day" at mostclubs, might be an advantage to Members being able to put together teams to attend.CLICK HERE TO VIEW SCHEDULE6

Employment CornerTIME IS MONEY!I know we have all heard the title above, “TIME IS MONEY” phrase when referring to a “lost opportunity”or when a day “gets away” from us. As you are preparing for 2013, what are you thinkingabout for the year? How are you setting yourself up for success and to make a difference, notonly for yourself but also for your employer? Are you on both ends of Communication? As an employee,do you know what is expected of you for 2013? If you employ people, have you laidout your plan for them?I am a firm believer to have a chance at being successful involves planning. We have all heardthe term “Circle of Life”. In Player Development speak the “Circle of Life” are the steps to player development thatinclude Communication, Analysis, Planning, Marketing, Execution and Tracking, and how the steps in this circleneed to be put into place for a successful outcome. The main thrust behind all of this was to get you to think aboutGolf 2.0 or as I like to refer to it as “Player Development”.However, the more I thought about the sequence of these steps, the more it occurred to me that virtually every facetof your business needs this sequence. The logical first step in this process is Communication. This can be in the formof changing your style of communication for 2013. Are you planning on doing a better job of meeting with your staff(if you are a Head Professional or GM)? It could also apply to anyone who oversees the Outside Service staff. One ofthe main reasons things do not work out in our jobs is the lack of communication. Does your employer/ board lay outa clear, understandable vision? If not, it is not too late to address this and ask for chance to meet so you can betterunderstand what the expectations are moving forward. Time and time again I have heard from the employer when achange has been made in the management of the facility that there was a “communication breakdown”. Typically, the employer will say the employee knew what was expected but did not perform or accomplish what we wantedthem to do. PLEASE!! Do not let this be you! Make sure the first step you take today will be the right step in Communication. If you are in a position of overseeing anyone at your place of work, do your part and make sure expectationsare clearly defined and the culture you are trying to establish is laid out in a written format but also verbalizedin a face-to-face meeting.Get the year started out on the right step! Communicate!! This will not guarantee that “Time is Money” but it willincrease the likelihood of success!PS- Please fill out the 2013 PGA Compensation Survey! Your fellow PGA Members really need you to do thisso the data collected portrays as accurate a reflection as possible!! The Employment Consultants need you toparticipate so that we can help you when working with employers. Remember, the survey is completely confidentialand we do not share this information with employers while a PGA member is employed. The informationis proprietary to you the Member! THANK YOU!!Please contact me if you have any questions or if you need any help with employment or career planning!Tim Marks, PGAEmployment Consultant815.630.5196 – officetmarks@pgahq.com8

74 TH SENIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIPPRESENTED BY KITCHENAID UPDATEAs you hopefully know by now, the 74 th Senior PGAChampionship presented by KitchenAid will be contested atBellerive Country Club May 21-26. The best players in theworld over the age of 50, including the likes of current RyderCup captain Tom Watson, Fred Couples, Jay Haas, Hale Irwin,Mark O’ Meara, Steve Elkington, Rocco Mediate and manymore will come to St. Louis to compete for the legendary AlfredS. Bourne Trophy and the title of Senior PGA Champion. It has been over twenty years since the PGA of America hascontested one of your Major Championships here in theGateway Section. The 1992 PGA Championship, won by NickPrice, was a fantastic showcase of the passionate support forgolf that can be found in this community. From the time Iarrived here in St. Louis to prepare for this Championship, it was obvious that the support from all levels of thecommunity - corporate, civic, consumer, member professionals, etc. - would be just as great this time around. It is the support of this community which has allowed the groundbreaking initiative PGA REACH to be launched thispast year. The energetic leadership team comprised of the Gateway Section staff and your fellow PGA professionalsworking together, has exponentially raised the bar for the impact that can be generated in connection with yourChampionships. It should be a major point of pride for all Gateway Section members that PGA REACH is beingrolled out into other PGA Championship host sites, and will become a major focus of the PGA Foundationnationally. PGA REACH will definitely be top of mind with your national PGA of America leadership team as theytravel to St. Louis this spring.Other aspects of the Senior PGA Championship are also being positively impacted by the generous support of thiscommunity. We recently broke the all-time Senior PGA Championship corporate hospitality sales record.Additionally, we are currently outpacing 8 of the last 10 Senior PGA’s in terms of ticket sales to date. On thevolunteer side, nearly 2,000 people have signed up to work during the Championship! We are hitting the stretch run of our planning efforts. It is hard to believe that in less than three months, a tee is goinginto the ground, the Championship will be underway, and before we know it someone will be lifting the BourneTrophy on the 18 th green. There is still time for you to get involved in the Championship. Please connect with Josh,Steve, Ali or any of the other Section staff and they will let you know what opportunities are available.Feel free to stop by the Championship Office at Bellerive and our staff would be happy to provide you with anyadditional information regarding your Championships. We hope to see all of you May 21-26!Jason MengelChampionship DirectorPGA of America9

Brought To You by Optimal Lifestyles, Inc.Stretching Toward Opening DayAs a golfer, you’re no doubt ready to get back tothe game after a long winter absence – but besmart about it in order to prevent injuries. Beforeyou dash out to hit those buckets of balls andsqueeze in as many rounds of golf as thespring-like weather permits, take time to warm up.If you can make stretching a priority in your fitnessroutine, your muscles and ligaments willbecome stronger and will thank you. As an addedbonus, you’ll move much more freely and feelmore confident on the tee.How to Warm-UpThe first step is to move in place and until yourbody feels warm. Then practice a golf swingslowly. This movement promotes muscleflexibility.Next, begin to stretch the arms, legs, hips, back, chest, shoulders, wrists, fingers and neck. Tostretch a muscle, you want to move it slowly, likepulling taffy through a full range of motion.Make Stretching a Daily RoutineAs a golfer, you need to stay limber and continueexercising to increase flexibility—this helps youperform a better turn in your swing. Keep thestretching and flexibility routine up on a regularbasis—i.e., work on it daily! Try mixing in a yogaclass once or twice a week so you’re sure to workall the important muscles.Once you see the difference stretching makes inyour game, it will become an essential part of yourdaily routine. And with proper stretching, you’llbe ready for opening day with confidence, flexibility and a swing that fuels your game!If you need help developing your flexibilityroutine, contact Optimal Lifestyles Inc. at314-984-0592 for information on class schedulesand individual sessions.Email: barb@optimallifestylesinc.comwww.optimallifestylesinc.comHold each stretch for 20 to 30 seconds with nobouncing.Don’t force muscles to stretch. After stretching, hit a few balls. Feeling loose? Then you’re ready to play your round.Remember to stretch when you finish, too. It willhelp you to avoid being stiff or tight from therepetitive golf motion. The same stretches workboth before and after your game.Optimal Lifestyles, Inc is a health and fitness consulting company and fitness education sponsor for the Gateway PGA.
