Since October it has been providing54 meals a day for the Social Exchanges.<strong>EDP</strong> SolidáriaCheese-production/Smokehouse, ADFP Foundation(PT) - total aid of EUR 75,000 given to developproduction activities and to integrate people withdisabilities into the labour market, making the mostof the endogenous resources of the Biological Park.The aim is to support 12 persons with specialneeds. The project was launched in late 2012.First results are expected in 2013.Energy, science andeducationEducation“Here’s A Story” Project (BR) - financial supportof EUR 31,100 given to Instituto Crescer para aCidadania to improve school pupils’ performance inwriting through teacher training and capacity building.Oviedo University - "Becas" (ES) A total of EUR 719,100awarded in the form of scholarship grants."Long Live our Energy" School Programme (ES) -EUR 227,700 awarded to promote education insustainability through the development of teachingmaterials on the origins of energy, advice on energyefficiency and recommendations for using energy safely.Three municipalities received aid (Aparecida,Roseira and Ferraz de Vasconcelos), covering54 teachers and 1,310 pupils.A book was published featuring storieswritten by the pupils and there were improvedperformance rates in the schools.150 university students received scholarshipgrants.A total of 146 schools and 20,500 childrenwere involved in the Basque and Murciaregions.Energies fordevelopmentEnvironment“Energies Without Borders” (ES) a projectimplemented by the Fundación Sin Fronteiras withthe aim of replacing diesel generator-based powergeneration with solar energy, with environmental andeconomic advantages coming from the fuel savings.In 2012 <strong>EDP</strong> provided EUR 7,100 in aid."Osprey Project" (PT) - EUR 123,100 awarded toa project to bring 10 birds to Portugal to enablereproductive recovery of this species.Installation of more than 200 photovoltaicpanels in the village of Nyuambani, Kenya.The village houses 1,000 orphaned childrenand 100 adults, who are grandparents to someof the children. It has 100 houses, a primaryschool, secondary school, and carpentry,metalworking and textiles workshops. Thereare also some 30 social buildings.10 ospreys (5 from Sweden and 5 fromFinland) have been brought to the naturalsurroundings of the Alqueva lake.Volunteering<strong>EDP</strong>VolunteeringProgramme(PV<strong>EDP</strong>)To promote citizenship amongst the workforce. Twolarge-scale campaigns were carried out, amongstothers: Part of Us - Forests and Part of Us - Christmas.Parte de Nós Florestas (PT): volunteers removedinvasive plants on 6 forests located in classified areasand two neighboring businesses <strong>EDP</strong>; The programmewas extended to all the countries where the Groupoperates with initiatives in environmental protection.www.partedenos.comParte de Nós Natal: volunteers humanized Christmasfor institutionalized children and the elderly throughactivities planned and executed as a group.More than 24,969 volunteering hours by <strong>EDP</strong>employees and family members/friends.The actions carried out in the Forest andChristmas 2012 campaigns brought togetheremployees, family members and businesspartner employees, with a total of 1,867 peopleinvolved in the actions and achieving a valueequal to €264,600.otherprojectsSports Bat Basque Team (ES) - A total of EUR 150,000awarded to this project in partnership with theBasque government and broadcaster EITB for thesupport, promotion and training of Olympic andParalympic athletes.Olympic Games in London 2012, with theparticipation of 24 Olympic athletes (14 menand 12 women) and 5 Paralympic athletes.Results: 3 Olympic bronze medals;1 silver and 1 bronze in the Paralympics.<strong>EDP</strong> - <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> 201283
: performance :Impact of new projectsIn the construction of new hydroelectric projects,<strong>EDP</strong> has implemented participative decisionmakingprocesses that involve the variousstakeholders, such as public and private bodiesand the local communities. <strong>EDP</strong> seeks to maintainclose relationships with these stakeholders,keeping them up to date on the different projectphases and their impacts and benefits andlistening to them in an effort to integrate theirexpectations and satisfy their needs. <strong>EDP</strong> policyin this area also includes investments in the formof community impact minimisation programmesfor new projects.Of the projects in construction phases,one can highlight:º º Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Power Plant,Portugal – For this project a financial fund wasset up to which <strong>EDP</strong> Produção will contributeyearly 3% of annual net value of the generatedoutput. The funds will go to projects promotingsustainable development, particularly theconservation and enhancement of naturalresources and heritage resources that createsocio-economic value and employment inthe region. Also planned is the building ofan Environmental and Animal RecoveryInterpretation Centre (CIARA) that can functionas an animation and pedagogic space and playan active role in the local communityas an instrument of communication, basedon a visiting and demonstration approach.The building of this plant calls for thesubmersion of two important religiousbuildings, the São Lourenço Chapel and theSanto Antão da Barca Sanctuary. Togetherwith the local councils and population two newlocations were defined for the translocationof these buildings. The relocation projects arescheduled for 2013.º º Foz Tua Hydroelectric Plant, Portugal – <strong>EDP</strong>Produção is donating 3% of the annual netvalue of the plant’s output to a Nature andBiodiversity Conservation Fund, which willalso be responsible for creating the TuaValley Regional National Park (approx. 25,000hectares). Also in the context of this project,the Tua Valley Regional Development Agencywas set up, to which <strong>EDP</strong> Produção willdonate EUR 1.5 m to help cover operation andmanagement costs. As compensation for theimpacts on the Tua railway line, a mobilityplan was presented that responds to twodistinct transportation needs – daily residentmobility and tourist transport. The plan includesimprovements to the Brunheda – Miradela line(33 km), which is not affected by the reservoir.Also in planning are the construction of the TuaValley Memory Nucleus and the implementationof a heritage development project for the region.º º Capacity increase for Venda Nova III andSalamonde II, Portugal – In 2012 threemeasures for offsetting social impactswere implemented: the Cávado II Park (inMontalegre), involving improvement works onthe banks of the River Cávado and the creationof a leisure zone on the right bank, whichis expected to attract 2,500 beneficiaries ayear; the installation of 4 bungalows in theCabreira camping site (Vieira do Minho), with2,000 guests expected each year, allowingfor maintenance of jobs at the site; andconstruction of an office building for theRuivães Parish Council (Vieira do Minho).º º Fridão Hydroelectric Plant, Portugal –Offsetting the socio-economic impacts of thisproject will be a more complex task. A total of48 homes will be affected, as well as hundreds84of various other buildings. <strong>EDP</strong> has carriedout an extensive programme of engagementand consultation with the local communities,as well as public consultation of the variouslocal government bodies and other entitiesinvolved in the management of the affectedstructures. During 2012 the Execution ProjectEnvironmental Conformity <strong>Report</strong> (RECAPE)was delivered and awaits a reply by AgênciaPortuguesa do Ambiente.º º Ribeiradio-Ermida Hydroelectric Plant,Portugal – This project will directly affect6 persons. In 2012 all expropriation processeswere amicably concluded. Relocation of thepersons affected has already begun, but fourof them (two couples) are still living in theexpropriated dwellings, where they may remainup to 6 months before the dam filling phase.A plan for monitoring the local socio-economiceffect of the expropriation process has alsobeen put in place.º º Jari Hydroelectric Plant, in Santo Antôniodo Jari (PA), Brazil – The dialogue betweenthe company and the local community hasinvolved, to date, some 50,000 people.Construction of the plant will lead to therelocation of 23 families, 16 from the villageof São Francisco do Iratapuru and 7 familiesliving along the banks of the Rio Jari. At therequest of the community, all 34 houses inthe village of São Francisco will be rebuilt ina new site using the same building standards.The educational campaigns on STDs/AIDS,vocational improvement and integrationbetween the construction site workers andthe community involved 5,000 people inthe region. In 2012 the community was keptinformed of the progress in the constructionwork through leaflets, individual and collectiveinformation sessions, guided tours of the worksite, radio programmes and awareness actionson environmental protection, which, all in all,reached 40,000 people.º º Pecém Thermoelectric Power Station, inSão Gonçalo do Amarante, Brazil – The firstmachine began operating in late 2012. Duringthe year one can highlight the promotion oftechnical qualification courses in the areasof construction, industrial mechanics andindustrial welding in partnership with CENTEC/CVTEC, resulting in 76 newly qualifiedworkers ready to enter the labour market.Other initiatives, such as the distribution ofinformation leaflets on the power station’sactivities, the organisation of an “EnvironmentWeek” and other educational actions, involvedroughly 16,000 people from the neighbouringcommunity.º º Cachoeira Caldeirão Hydroelectric Plant,in Amapá State, Brazil – Creating the damreservoir will submerge 2,600 hectares of land,including approx. 10 ha of the urban area ofPorto Grande and 1,611 hectares of the AmapáState Forest. Some 20 socio-environmentalimpact offsetting or mitigation programmeshave already been defined for implementationby the company. In the environmental impactassessment process, the possibility ofrelocating some families was identified but thenumber can only be finalised after completionof the socio-economic diagnosis for the project,which is scheduled for 2013 second quarter.º º Construction of the Itapeti São José HighVoltage Line by <strong>EDP</strong> Bandeirante in Brazil– This project will also entail the relocationof a number of families living in clandestinehousing within the safety strip along the futurepower line.
