Customers with hearing impairmentsstill have a dedicated telephone channel.Product safetyIn the <strong>EDP</strong> Group, information on safe energyuse is provided in all geographic regions on theCompany websites and in brochures and customerguides, etc. Any citizen can report, via the internetor by telephone, situations that constitute a hazardor imminent accident risk, such as downed lines,open switchboard cabinets, tree branches close topower lines, etc. (see page 83 for more informationon public awareness initiatives.)In Brazil, the Good Energy in the CommunityProgramme organises conferences on safe energyconsumption and the dangers and risks involvedin improper use of electricity. The appeals for safebehaviour are reinforced in festive periods. In 2012the Escelsa and Bandeirante distributors took part,for the seventh consecutive year, in the 7 th NationalSafety with Electric Energy Week, which had themotto Safety – Choose Life and was organised bythe Association of Brazilian Electricity Distributors(ABRADEE). In addition to radio spots and otheradvertisements in the media, information was alsospread via electricity bills and educational talks inschools and on building sites.PrivacyThe privacy of customers’ personal data isguaranteed in the general terms and conditionsof electricity and gas supply contracts in thevarious geographic areas. All information isprotected by the best practices and procedureswith a view to guaranteeing the confidentiality,integrity and availability of the information.For customer prospection or direct marketingpurposes the customer’s authorisation is soughtto store and use their personal data and to provideit to third parties.More information on the guarantee of dataprotection can be found at www.edp.pt> aboutedp> principles and policies.3.6.5. energy efficiencypromotionPromoting energy efficiency in consumption isa responsibility <strong>EDP</strong> undertakes in relation to itscustomers in the various geographic regions inwhich it operates.The Portuguese website www.eco.edp.ptpublishes projects and actions for the residential,business and corporate segments and alsospecific initiatives aimed at younger audiences.In 2012 <strong>EDP</strong> and the Confederation of PortugueseIndustry (CIP) signed a cooperation protocol forthe joint launch and dynamisation of a programmeto promote and support the implementation of<strong>EDP</strong> - <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> 2012major energy efficiency projects in companies.In the scope of the programme – known as Saveto Compete – <strong>EDP</strong> identifies energy consumptionreduction measures in companies that havesigned up to the programme and supports theirimplementation and costs through the savingsgenerated. Applications are registered atwww.savetocompete.com. In 2012, 68applications were received and two individualprotocols were drawn up with two businessassociations – ATP and APICER.In the context of the Programme for thePromotion of Efficiency in ElectricityConsumption (PPEC) 2011-2013, which is anERSE competition, the year 2012 saw a numberof actions aimed specifically at business andresidential customersPPEC Business:º º replacement of discharge lamps with T5fluorescent tubes;º º electronic speed variation for cooling,ventilation and pumping systems.In all, 100 projects were supported and EUR 1.2m in financing was awarded (up 62% from 2011),with total estimated savings of 9,364 MWh.The first projects for high performance motorsand freecooling were also launched.PPEC Residential:º º distribution of 1 million energy-saving light bulbsto social welfare institutions and their respectiveusers, allowing for energy savings of someEUR 34 million, the equivalent of the annualconsumption of 93,000 Portuguese householdsfor one year;º º a co-creation initiative in the area of energyefficiency and smart grids networks in whichguest customers participated.Since the launch of the PPEC in 2007 it isestimated that, all in all, the tangible actionscarried out by <strong>EDP</strong> have resulted in accumulatedreductions in energy consumption of 5.2 TWh,the equivalent of the average annual electricityconsumption of almost 2 million Portuguesehouseholds, and prevented the emissionof 1.8 Mton CO 2.Also since 2007, <strong>EDP</strong> has been monitoringdomestic consumer attitudes and behavioursin Portugal and reflecting these in an EnergyEfficiency Index. This index continues on itsupward path, finishing at 74.7% in 2012, up two ppfrom 2011. Energy savings continues to be a greatmotivator for efficient behaviour.In Spain, HC Energía and Naturgás promoteenergy efficiency through the web pagehttp://eficiencia.hcenergia.com, which providesdetailed information on initiatives and specificproducts and services per segment andtechnology, as described in page 78.In Brazil, investment in energy efficiencyreached EUR 9.5 million in 2012, resulting inenergy savings estimated at 29,305 MWh/yearand a reduction of 19,729 kW in demand in peakperiods. The following projects are particularlynoteworthy:º º Good energy in the community: conservationactions aimed at low-income consumers, withthe donation of efficient appliances;º º Good solar energy: conservation actionsfor residential and low-income customers,promoting the replacement of the traditionalelectric shower unit with solar heating systemswith intelligent electric showers;º º Good energy in schools: empowerment actionsfor teachers as multipliers of conservation and77Initiatives for children/youths• A TUA ENERGIA/YOUR ENERGY:www.geracaoedp.edp.pt/atuaenergia/• TWIST Project – aimed atsecondary school pupils with thegoal of raising their awarenessto energy efficiency and climatechange. The schools competefor total prize money of EUR100,000 for the implementationof energy efficiency measuresin their premises. www.edp.pt>sustainability> society> science andeducation> twist.• ECO CHALLENGE Project –a project that provides an inschoolelectricity consumptionmonitoring system. Thirty-sixsecondary schools from all overthe country are taking part in thisproject. They have access to alltheir consumption data throughthe installed web platform.
