: performance :The set of indicators published by <strong>EDP</strong> reflectthe results of the actions and initiatives carriedout over the year to improve safety conditionsat work, namely in the areas of training andawareness, risk assessment and control,preventive measures in our service providers andthe increased audit and inspection programme.Despite these efforts, we regrettably haveto report five <strong>EDP</strong> employee deaths in roadaccidents in Portugal. As far as external serviceproviders are concerned, there were 13 fatalaccidents reported, 3 of which due to a suddenand unforeseen landslide, 1 for road accident andthe other by acts or unsafe situations. For moreinformation go to www.edp.pt> sustainability>occupational health and safety> safety innumbers.Eight people outside <strong>EDP</strong> also died in accidentsinvolving <strong>EDP</strong> electrical installations orequipment, mainly in situations of constructionwork in the vicinity of power lines in tension.Highlighted activitiesin 2012Execution of the <strong>EDP</strong> annual occupational healthand safety programme was based on a set ofactions aimed at preventing work accidents andoccupational diseases. These actions includedin particular: the training and education of <strong>EDP</strong>and service provider employees, permanentassessment and control of occupational risks andexecution of a programme of internal and externalinspections and audits of the <strong>EDP</strong> premises andwork sites.Training and awarenessThe occupational health and safety trainingprogramme administered to <strong>EDP</strong> workers in 2012included an extensive schedule of 1,811 sessionsinvolving 17,202 employees and 92,014 traininghours.In 2012 there were 170 first aid training coursesfor <strong>EDP</strong> and service provider employees,involving a total of 1,491 trainees.In collaboration with local fire brigade units,vocational and secondary schools, businessassociations and trade unions, some 65information actions were held on proceduresfor fighting fires in electrical installations, gasnetworks and installations, or in places close tosuch installations, as well as the care to be takenin handling electrical equipment.Preparation for response to emergencysituationsWith the aim of testing the effectiveness of internalemergency plans, in 2012 a total of 212 emergencydrill exercises were carried out in a range ofindustrial and administrative facilities and works inprogress (49 in Portugal, 94 in Spain, 40 in Brazil,18 in the US and 11 in other geographic regions).These exercises involved external entities suchas civil protection agencies and the fire and police/public safety authorities. In this context one canhighlight an emergency drill on the WindFloatplatform with the collaboration of the PortugueseAir Force aimed at testing the response of rescueresources in an evacuation scenario for a seriouslyinjured person.<strong>EDP</strong> - <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> 201273
