HAPPY 25TH ANNIVERSARYWE HAVE A LOT TO CELEBRATEWhether you’ve been here 25 years or 25 days, you are part of something veryspecial this year. Our anniversary is a tribute to a proud past of providing thebest possible care for our patients. We began as builders. We started from a farmer’s corn field and created a spaceto house innovation and excellence in health care. We became providers, openingour doors to offer the best possible health care for the people of Mississauga andthe surrounding regions. We were and are forever learners, taking lessons fromchallenging times and defining ourselves as an organization. We continue to beleaders, paving the way as champions of care in four regional programs: renal care, genetics, cancer care, maternal child care and genetics.Today, we are partnering with other leaders in Ontario to bring better health caretoday so that we are ready for tomorrow. Together, we are creating better healthcare each and every day and we will continue to do so – to live our promiseHappy Anniversary - we have a lot to celebrate!Michelle DiEmanuelepresident & CEOThe Credit Valley HospitalDr. Matt Gyslerchief of medical staffThe Credit Valley HospitalKathy Haypresident & CEOThe Credit Valley Hospital FoundationTHE CREDIT VALLEY HOSPITAL | 2

CREDIT VALLEY’S DOORS OPENED TO PATIENTS. WHILE WEDELIVERED CARE TO THE GROWING POPULATION INMISSISSAUGA AND OUR COMMUNITY PROVIDED RIGHT BACK TO US.P R O V I D I N G1985to1995On November 5th, 1985, the originalCredit Valley team was ready. The floorswere spotless. Leading-edge equipmentwas waiting to be used. Meals were readyto be served. The best and the brightestmedical teams were here and ambulanceswere given the go-ahead and told they couldbring patients to Credit Valley’s emergencydepartment. We all watched, as young families came toMississauga. We were providing care forthose who needed it - from the tiniest ofbabies to the elderly and those at the end oflife. Our message was clear. The CreditValley Hospital was ready to bring the bestquality, safe and compassionate health careto Mississauga. While our employees and physicians wereproviding health care for a rapidly growingMississauga, our community demonstratedpride and confidence in our hospital throughits continued support. This support laid thefoundation for Credit Valley to continue tobuild and provide care for more than onemillion people.THE CREDIT VALLEY HOSPITAL | 4

THE LEARNING YEARS WERE A TURNING POINTFOR CREDIT VALLEY AS WE STARTED TO DEFINEWHO WE WANTED TO BE AS AN ORGANIZATION.L E A R N I N G1995to2000Credit Valley was no longer a new hospital -it was experiencing the expected challengesof a 10 year old organization. High volumesmeant our providers had to be fiscallyresponsible while proving safe, high qualitycare. It was time for The Credit ValleyHospital to examine these challenges, evaluate and decide how to best managethem. The learning stage was a turning pointin the hospital’s history.Mississauga had nearly doubled itspopulation since Credit Valley opened. The growth placed tremendous strain onmedical professionals, physical facilities andthe hospital’s administrative team, as wemaintained the same patient experience ofhealing and hope: one that had developed ascentral to Credit Valley’s reputation. Our city was growing and changingquickly. The diversity of our communitymeant patient care needs were changing– they were more complex. The shiftingprovincial health care landscape combinedwith the increasing needs in our catchmentarea meant Credit Valley had to define itself. These years were critical to our evolution, shaping our future as leaders.

CREDIT VALLEY TRANSITIONED FROM ACOMMUNITY HOSPITAL TO A TEACHING CENTREAND HOST TO FOUR REGIONAL PROGRAMS.L E A D I N G2000to2010While leadership and innovation has beenpart of our brand since the beginning, it wasthe leading years that defined Credit Valley’sareas of true expertise. Labelled ’centres ofexcellence,’ hospitals in Ontario identifiedregional centres of specialization. CreditValley transitioned from a community hospitalto one with regional responsibilities.Based on an urgent need for cancer care inMississauga and the surrounding region, The“World Class. Right Here” campaign raisedmore than $50 million for a state-of-the-artcancer facility. Our community stepped upwith tremendous support.Today, The Credit Valley Hospital offersregional programs in maternal child care, genetics, renal care and cancer care.We never lost sight of Credit Valley’s spirit –our team environment remained dedicatedto healing and hope in every patientexperience. This spirit has kept us true to ourcommitment to our community.THE CREDIT VALLEY HOSPITAL | 6

THE INTERROGATIONBefore we were officially open for business, we wereconducting job interviews in a room that moreresembled an interrogation room than an interviewroom. There was a single bulb hanging from awire from the ceiling in an unpainted room – thatinterview was with Jan Decaire, my colleague innuclear medicine - it worked out – she’s still here25 years later!Christopher Lyn, nuclear medicine technologistTHESE AREAMONG THEMORE THAN100 EMPLOYEESWHO HAVEWORKED ATCVH SINCE 1985WE FELT LIKE FAMILYI remember sitting on the floor of whatis now the Skylight Dining Room 25years ago with the maternal child nurseswho have become lifelong friends andcolleagues. We were part of the greatsynergy and excitement as we preparedto open the doors to our first patients! The contagious enthusiasm andcompassion of the welcoming speechesgiven by paediatricians, obstetriciansand other founders continue to inspireme.Lina Ranieri, clinical informaticsWE’D ONLY JUST BEGUNI remember an intense feeling of excitement andanticipation as I walked through the front doors, and along corridors of a hospital with no patients. It was quite a strange feeling.Valerie Carter, eating disorders programWE PLAYED TOGETHERIn the early years, we had CVH baseball and volleyball leagues. It didn’tmatter if you were a vice president or a porter, a technologist or a doctor. We all played together as one and we worked together as one; that to meis what makes CVH so special.Melodie Hawkins, UCA

BUILDING OUR PROGRAMSI remember in the early years (1985-87)working with a group of physicians out ofmakeshift offices on 1E and having a sense ofworking together on building the programsof CVH. Another favorite memory thatcontinues to be created every day is workingwith the nursing staff at CVH.Dr. Robert Sauls, director of palliative careWE’VE BEENHERE FOR25 YEARSTHE ‘FIRSTS’Our first baby was a bundle of joy but mymost meaningful interaction with a patientcame through my work in palliative care – itcontinues to be my most rewarding work atCredit Valley.Zelia Gonsalves, resource centre technicianGROWING UP ATTHE VALLEYI walked through the impressive doors ofthe then brand new Credit Valley Hospital inNovember 1985. Surrounded by fields andwith a promise of a shopping mall, many ofus ‘grew up’ here at ‘The Valley.’ 25 years later,I owe a great deal to my fellow professionals, programs and patients for nurturing me in mycareer as a social worker. I am grateful.Victoria Glassford, social workWE WERE MAKING HISTORYI started before the hospital was receiving patients andwas still under construction, in anticipation of the grandopening. The friendships made in those early days continueto grow and be celebrated. The memories we made arecountless and priceless.Betty Baginski, financial servicesTHERE WAS CARPET EVERYWHERE!On opening night, I had the privilege to deliver two babies.Labour and delivery was beautiful – it was completely carpetedexcept for a little rectangle of linoleum at the base of thepatients’ bed. I made a great mess of the brand new carpetingwith various body fluids which I failed to aim at the linoleumand tracked said fluids down the pristine hallway since myshoes, which were covered with paper booties were soaked. Iinstantly became infamous at both Credit Valley and Trilliumfor making messes. The carpeting was pulled up soon after.Dr. Paul Philbrook, chief of family medicineTHE CREDIT VALLEY HOSPITAL | 10
