2010-2011 Coaching StaffHead Coach Larry CoxLarry Cox begins his 13th season as the only men’sbasketball coach in the history of the <strong>Lions</strong>’ program.He started the program in 1998 and his team finishedwith a winning record in its inaugural season. Over thepast 12 seasons he has built the Mount into a solid,competitive basketball program that has achievedwinning seasons and into a team that has defeated Top 25 opponents.Coach Cox is looking to take the Mount to the next step this season –competing for the HCAC regular season title and getting the <strong>Lions</strong> backinto the HCAC Tournament. The <strong>Lions</strong>’ coach is also entering his seventhyear as the Mount’s assistant athletic director.Coach Cox’s first head coaching position came in the 1990 season atThomas More College as he inherited a program that had not had awinning season in a decade and during his coaching tenure he turnedthe program around - finishing with four straight winning seasons. Hecompiled an overall record of 96-95 and was named AMC Coach of the Yearin both the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons, while also leading his school tothe AMC regular season and tournament championships.Prior to his tenure at Thomas More, Cox was the associate head coachfrom 1983-1989 at St. Joseph’s College (Indiana), an NCAA Division IIprogram, where he helped lead the program to an average of 16 wins aseason in the tough Great Lakes Valley Conference, which includesperennial powerhouses Kentucky Wesleyan, Southern Indiana and NorthernKentucky.Coach Cox also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at NCAADivision I Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1981-82 and 1982-83.During the first season the Falcons were conference runners-up and in thesecond season they won the Mid-American Conference outright finishingwith a 21-9 record. For two seasons, from 1979-1981, he was an assistantat Hanover College (Indiana), where the school averaged 24 wins a season,won two Hoosier-Buckeye Conference Championships and advanced to theElite Eight in the NAIA National Tournament.Coach Cox holds a Bachelor of Arts in History degree from HanoverCollege (Indiana) and a Master of Arts in History degree and a Master ofEducation in Physical Education degree from Bowling Green StateUniversity (Ohio). He has taught classes at Bowling Green StateUniversity, St. Joseph’s College, Thomas More College, and the Mount.During his tenure as a head coach, every player who has completed theirfour years of eligibility obtained a degree.Coach Cox and his wife, Beth, reside in West Chester, Ohio and havetriplet sons, Luke, Jake and Ryan.MOUNT HEAD MEN’S BASKETBALL COACHES’ RECORDSCoach Years Seasons G W L W. Walters is also the <strong>Lions</strong>’head men’s tennis coach. He was named associatehead men’s basketball coach in August 2007. Waltersis the basketball program’s recruiting, strength andconditioning and summer camp coordinator.Walters came to the Mount from Thomas More College where he was amen’s basketball assistant coach since 2000. He was also Thomas More’shead men’s tennis coach (2004-2005), guiding the team to a 7-5 record,and was the men’s and women’s head cross country coach (2005-2006).Walters also assisted the men’s basketball team at John Carroll Universityas a graduate assistant coach (1999-2000), after playing for two seasonsand being a student assistant coach for two seasons. He also has workedat Thomas More College, John Carroll University and Wittenberg Universitybasketball camps.The <strong>Lions</strong>’ coach is a 1994 graduate of Villa Angela-St. Joseph HighSchool in Cleveland, Ohio, where his team won the Ohio Division II stateChampionship during his senior season. Walters was a Second Team All-District and Honorable Mention All-City selection while in high school.He is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and theBlack Coaches Association.Walters is a 1999 graduate of John Carroll University, where heobtained a Bachelor of Arts in Communications degree.
