The Cooperative Education program, available for all majors, is away for students to gain valuable, paid career experience while validating their choice of a major.Student-athletes are among the Mount’s most active leaders on campus. Competing in the HeartlandCollegiate Athletic Conference, the Mount fields more than 20 NCAA Division III sports teams. Thenewest lineup, men’s volleyball, began in spring 2010. Students also participate in 30 student-run clubs andorganizations including Student Government Association and Black Student Union.The Mount is committed to working with students to explore all financial aid options, especially eligibilityfor financial assistance including scholarships. Our student-athletes work hard andlove the sports they play, and are always backed bysupportive faculty, coaches and staff who are committedto helping them achieve success.This year the Mount pays homage to the roots of ourathletics program with the establishment of the AthleticHall of Fame. The first inductees are considered cornerstones of Mountathletics: Kay Corcoran, T. Jean Dowell and Pat Shibinski. Our goal is nothing short ofdeveloping a nationally competitive NCAA Division III athletic programfor our students and the community.God bless,Meet the Director of <strong>Athletics</strong>Steve RadcliffeSteve Radcliffe enters his 16th year as the <strong>Lions</strong>’athletics director for the 2009-2010 school year, andhe looks forward to another outstanding season ofathletics at the Mount.Radcliffe, who oversees 22 athletic programs at theMount, has long been a part of the sports programs atthe College. Radcliffe began his career at the Mount in1986 as an athletic trainer and was hired to implement the Mount’s firstacademic program for athletic training in 1989. In addition to teachingathletic training, he was the <strong>Lions</strong>’ head athletic trainer for all theintercollegiate sports at the College.Radcliffe became the Mount’s athletic director in 1995. Upon enteringthe position, he stressed the importance of upholding the College’s stellarreputation of academics and athletics as a positive influence in studentlife and development at the Mount. FacilitiesSports Complex and Schueler FieldThe Sports Complex provides a state-of-the-art space for student-athletes and the fanswho support them. It houses concessions, locker rooms, showers, equipment storage, andathletic training facilities and can seat sell-out crowds of 2,400. Sporting a synthetic,all-weather playing surface and track, the Mount’s Schueler Field plays host to thefootball, soccer and lacrosse teams, in addition to hometrack meets.Harrington CenterFeaturing a 2,000-seat gymnasium, the Jean Patrice Harrington, SC, Student Center ishome to the <strong>Lions</strong> basketball and volleyball teams, and plays host to the wrestling team’shome matches. In addition, the facility includes a running track, racquetball courts, afitness center, and an athletic training center, providing service to student-athletes andthe greater Mount community.Kinder Morgan Softball ComplexThe Kinder Morgan Softball Complex has played host to the Mount’s softball team since2007. In addition, the College has developed property on River Road into practice fieldsfor soccer and baseball. The facilities feature parking, restrooms and a service buildingfor equipment storage.Midland Field and Marge Schott StadiumThe <strong>Lions</strong>’ baseball team plays home games at Midland Field in Amelia, Ohio, and at theUniversity of Cincinnati’s Marge Schott Stadium. Midland Field is one of Cincinnati’s finestbaseball facilities for teams and spectators. The stadium features an indoor batting cageand a professionally maintained playing field.Marge Schott Stadium, has a seating capacity of 3,085, a field turf playing surface and afully-lit playing field. In addition, the complex houses indoor batting cages and pitcher’smound, a fully equipped press box with private viewing areas, a players’ clubhouse andlounge, dressing rooms for coaches, full laundry and equipment facilities, and astate-of-the-art training room.Aston Oaks Golf CourseAston Oaks Golf Course, located 15 minutes from campus, is the Mount’s home golf coursefor the men’s and women’s golf teams. Constructed by the Jack Nicklaus Design Group,Aston Oaks is a par-72 course. The men’s team faces 6,908 yards with a 73.6 rating and140 slope. The women’s team faces 5,758 yards with a 73.2 rating and a 130 slope.Mount Tennis CourtsThe <strong>Lions</strong>’ men’s and women’s tennis teams play all home matches on the six, fully-litasphalt courts located behind the Harrington Center.Hayden FieldLocated on the west side of campus, next to the tennis courts, Hayden Field is amulti-purpose site that includes a practice field for softball and track & field athletes.2010-2011 MEN’S BASKETBALL GUIDE 5

2010-2011 Season OutlookFor the 2010-2011 season the men’s basketball team is going to have tofill some big shoes from the past season. The team lost four seniors whocontributed 62 percent of the <strong>Lions</strong>’ scoring in 2009-2010. Head CoachLarry Cox is confident in the talent level of the team but feels they willhave to “tweak a few things” in order to take advantage of the new talent.The <strong>Lions</strong> graduated First Team All-HCAC honoree Michael Romes aswell as Honorable Mention All-Conference players Travis Huffman and KyleMcCord. Mike Mechler, guard, was also lost to graduation. In all, the <strong>Lions</strong>will have to replace almost 3,500 career points. Cox, while making someadjustments due to the heavy losses, will continue with his philosophy ofattacking the ball and attacking the rim.“My offense is going to be very similar, but we’ll emphasize different setplays than what we used a year ago,’’ Cox states. “I’m confident we’re goingto be a better shooting team and hopefully we’ll be able to put multipleplayers on the floor that will have the ability to shoot the ball so thedefense can’t key on one or two players.”For the season Coach Cox said he will be emphasizing to the team toestablish their own identity which starts with being physically and mentallytough, and competing hard for 40 minutes every game. Other areas thatwill be emphasized include, utilizing your defense to create your offense,improving full court pressure, rebounding more tenaciously at both ends,and taking better care of the ball.“You have to have players who will buy into the system,’’ Cox adds.“If they believe in each other then they will share the ball, they’ll put theteam first and understand it’s the name on the front of the jersey thatmatters, not the back.”The top returners the <strong>Lions</strong> will feature this season include lettermen:seniors Jordan Brown and John Valerius, as well as junior David Lane.“I want these guys to continue to improve, be a year better not just ayear older and to keep improving and expanding their game,’’ Cox says.Two potential key personnel additions are transfers Ben Haarman andMatt Wester, both of whom came from scholarship programs and usedlast year to practice with the team and learn the system. Both Westerand Haarman are seniors. Sophomores Alex Cole, Najeeb Abdur-Rahman,Aaron Barber, and Colin Smart will all be looked upon to make significantcontributions as well.“These guys have now graduated from being on the junior varsity teamto now being college varsity players and they’ll have some growing painsbut they also have the right blend of talent and toughness we’re lookingfor,” says Cox.Asked about any key games for the team this season Coach Cox says,“They are all key games, we have a very ambitious schedule, but thenon-conference games against Wilmington College and Thomas MoreCollege, both of whom are top-20 teams nationally, certainly stand out aswell as our exhibition game against NCAA Division II Northern KentuckyUniversity and a regular season game at Division I Ball State University.Of course all our games in the HCAC are key to us. There’s a reason theconference is considered one of the six power conferences in the nation,there is just so much parity and balance from top to bottom. 2010-2011 Coaching StaffHead Coach Larry CoxLarry Cox begins his 13th season as the only men’sbasketball coach in the history of the <strong>Lions</strong>’ program.He started the program in 1998 and his team finishedwith a winning record in its inaugural season. Over thepast 12 seasons he has built the Mount into a solid,competitive basketball program that has achievedwinning seasons and into a team that has defeated Top 25 opponents.Coach Cox is looking to take the Mount to the next step this season –competing for the HCAC regular season title and getting the <strong>Lions</strong> backinto the HCAC Tournament. The <strong>Lions</strong>’ coach is also entering his seventhyear as the Mount’s assistant athletic director.Coach Cox’s first head coaching position came in the 1990 season atThomas More College as he inherited a program that had not had awinning season in a decade and during his coaching tenure he turnedthe program around - finishing with four straight winning seasons. Hecompiled an overall record of 96-95 and was named AMC Coach of the Yearin both the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons, while also leading his school tothe AMC regular season and tournament championships.Prior to his tenure at Thomas More, Cox was the associate head coachfrom 1983-1989 at St. Joseph’s College (Indiana), an NCAA Division IIprogram, where he helped lead the program to an average of 16 wins aseason in the tough Great Lakes Valley Conference, which includesperennial powerhouses Kentucky Wesleyan, Southern Indiana and NorthernKentucky.Coach Cox also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at NCAADivision I Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1981-82 and 1982-83.During the first season the Falcons were conference runners-up and in thesecond season they won the Mid-American Conference outright finishingwith a 21-9 record. For two seasons, from 1979-1981, he was an assistantat Hanover College (Indiana), where the school averaged 24 wins a season,won two Hoosier-Buckeye Conference Championships and advanced to theElite Eight in the NAIA National Tournament.Coach Cox holds a Bachelor of Arts in History degree from HanoverCollege (Indiana) and a Master of Arts in History degree and a Master ofEducation in Physical Education degree from Bowling Green StateUniversity (Ohio). Assistant Coach Gil VoigtGil Voigt begins his 13th season as an assistant coachat the Mount. He graduated from Ohio University in1975 where he earned his bachelor’s degree in radio-TVcommunications. Voigt earned his master’s degree inbiology from UNC-Charlotte in 1990.Coach Voigt started his coaching career at highschools in Charlotte and Wilmington, North Carolina. He coached at LaneyHigh School in Wilmington, North Carolina, where a few years before hebegan coaching, Michael Jordan had graduated. He then moved to Floridawhere he was head coach of St. Andrew’s Methodist in Brandon, Florida.He has been an assistant at Oak Hills High School (1994-1998), and hascoached many teams in AAU programs offered to basketball players in thesummer. He was also a television sportscaster for WECT-TV and WWAY-TV inWilmington, North Carolina, for nine years.Coach Voigt worked as the assistant publicity director, in spring training,for the Cincinnati Reds, 1991-1993. He currently produces TV statistics formany major league baseball teams that come to Great American Ballpark.Coach Voigt has also been a licensed football, basketball and baseballofficial since 1974, and is currently employed by the Fairfield City SchoolDistrict as a science teacher. In addition, Voigt is the head junior varsityand varsity assistant baseball coach at Madeira High School.Coach Voigt resides in Cincinnati, Ohio.Assistant Coach Rodney MorganRodney Morgan begins his sixth season on the Mount’sstaff. He was a student assistant coach for the men’s basketballteam while at OSU.While at Ohio State, Stuker worked as a student manager for Ohio State’smen’s basketball team. During his four-year career as a manager he was apart of two Big Ten Championship teams in 2006 and 2007, both coachedby Thad Matta. During 2007, Ohio State made a Final Four appearance andearned a spot in the National Championship game. Other institutions thatare also members of this conference include: Anderson University, BlufftonUniversity, Defiance College, Earlham College, Franklin College, HanoverCollege, Manchester College, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, andTransylvania University.In 1998, the first year for the Mount’s basketball program as well as thefirst year of the HCAC play, the lions went 5-9 in the conference, which putthem in sixth place out of eight teams. Jarrett Young was named Freshmanof the Year and gained Honorable Mention All-Conference award. Joe Toneyalso received an All-Conference Honorable Mention award for his effortsduring the season.The Mount greatly improved in the 1999-2000 season. The <strong>Lions</strong> were 6-6in conference play and won their way into the final four of the tournamentwhere they lost in overtime to the champion, Franklin College. JarrettYoung was All-Tournament team for his contribution during the postseason.Other <strong>Lions</strong> received acknowledgement for outstanding play. JaredFranz and Joe Toney were named All-Conference while Young was namedAll-Conference Honorable Mention. Joe Toney also was named Player of theWeek twice during the season.The <strong>Lions</strong> tied for fifth place in the HCAC with five wins and seven losesin the 2000-01 season. The Mount was actually in first place with abouttwo weeks to play but slipped in the standings and finished as the seventhand last seed in the post-season conference tournament. The <strong>Lions</strong>’ seasoncame to an end in the first round with a loss to Hanover, 73-69. Juniorforward Jared Franz was selected All-Conference while junior forward SteveBain was chosen Honorable Mention All-Conference.The 2001-2002 campaign was a season marked by milestoneachievements for two players. Seniors Joe Toney and Jarrett Young bothscored their 1,000 th career point. Steve Bain was named First Team All-Conference and was also a Player of the Week. Young received an All-Conference Honorable Mention award. The Mount lost in the first roundof the tournament but placed fifth in the regular season team standings,recording a 5-9 mark.The <strong>Lions</strong> began the 2002-2003 season winning three of their first fourconference games and were 5-3 before suffering six straight HCAC losses.The Mount defeated second-place Anderson University and fourth-placeDefiance College during the regular season, the Mount bounced back todefeat the Spartans on the road in the first round of the tournament. TomLuther, who finished second in the conference in rebounding, was a twotime HCAC Player of the Week winner and also made All-Conference. ChrisWashington was also selected to the All-Conference team.In 2003-2004, the Mount played competitively throughout most ofthe HCAC campaign, despite posting a 4-10 conference mark. Their winsincluded triumphs over Manchester and Anderson, as well as Defiance andBluffton (back-to-back). The Mount also lost two games in overtime toAnderson and Transylvania. They did, however, win three of their last fiveregular season HCAC games and suffered a one-point loss to Defiance inthe HCAC tournament. Seniors Tom Luther and E.J. Engelkamp collectedconference post-season awards. Luther was sixth in the conference inscoring, while teammate Matt Volkerding was first in rebounding and thirdin blocked shots.The Mount began the 2004-2005 season conference slate with twostraight wins and played well at home, finishing 4-3 in conference play.The <strong>Lions</strong>, however, recorded a 1-6 road record in the conference, winningonly at Defiance College. After that win, the Mount dropped four straightHCAC match-ups to slip to 5-9 in the conference. They dropped a six-pointdecision in the first round of the HCAC Tournament to eventual winnerFranklin College. The <strong>Lions</strong> finished third as a team in blocked shots andtied for first in steals. Kevin Darthard, who was named First Team All-Conference, was fifth in HCAC in scoring average and field goal percentage.Derrick Jones was selected Honorable Mention All-HCAC.In 2005-2006, the <strong>Lions</strong> had one of the most successful seasons inthe program’s history. Winning six of their first seven games to start theseason, the Mount finished 16-11 overall and 8-6 in the tough HCAC.Finishing fourth in the HCAC regular season, the <strong>Lions</strong> were the numberfour seed and hosted their conference tournament opener, beatingnumber five seed Manchester 67-55. However, their season would end inthe conference semifinals, when they lost to the seventh-ranked teamin the country, Transylvania, 83-79. Leading the way for the Mount wereseniors Kevin Darthard and Derrick Jones, who were voted First team All-Conference. Other notable HCAC accomplishments included juniors RobbieNoschang and Tony Blomer being named Honorable Mention All-HCAC.The <strong>Lions</strong> started out slowly in the conference in 2006-2007, going1-2 but then ran off a five-game win streak to up their record to 6-2. TheMount was in the thick of the conference race for first place the rest of theseason, but was hurt by two close losses down the stretch – an overtimeloss to Defiance and a one point defeat to Bluffton.24<strong>COLLEGE</strong> <strong>OF</strong> MOUNT <strong>ST</strong>. <strong>JOSEPH</strong>


Their 9-7 record was tied for the third-best record in the conference, butthe Mount was denied the fourth and final HCAC tournament spot on thetie-breaker system. Michael Romes was selected first Freshman of the Yearand First Team All-HCAC while teammate Tony Blomer was also a First TeamAll-Conference selection. Romes led the conference in field goal percentagewhile Blomer paced the HCAC in blocked shots. Teammates Jeff Perry andMichael Eirons both made Honorable Mention All-HCAC.The <strong>Lions</strong> had a rough start to the 2007-2008 conference season, losingtheir first four HCAC games, but bounced back to win two of three afterthat. The win total for HCAC games included a victory over conferencechampion Defiance. The Mount was fifth in points per game and fourth infield goal percentage while several individual <strong>Lions</strong>’ players made their markin HCAC games. Michael Romes was second in points per game, and fifthin rebounds per game and shooting percentage, while teammate MichaelEirons ranked in top 11 in four different statistical categories in conferenceaction. Josh Carter led the conference in assists per game and fourth infree throw accuracy. Romes was selected First Team All-HCAC for the secondstraight season while Mitchell Goldschmidt, Eirons and Carter were chosenHonorable Mention All-Conference. Romes also picked up an HCAC Player ofthe Week award.While the Mount only captured two conference wins during the 2008-2009 season, they did play competitively in a number of HCAC games,losing nine games by 10 points or less, including four games, by four pointsor less. One big win during the HCAC season was the team’s one-pointhome win over Bluffton University, who finished with the third-best recordin HCAC play.
