Welcome to the Pembroke Old Scholars Football Club weekly newsletter. Inside thisedition you will find updates on happenings at the greenest club in town!Round 5 saw the Reserves and C-Grade continue their winning ways and move to awin-loss record of 4-1 respectively with hard fought matches against a quality opponentin Payneham Norwood Union. Both sides are now firmly cemented amongst the leagueleaders on the ladder and are looking forward to their Round 6 match-up with the Tigers.A depleted Senior side found the going tough against the undefeated Falcons, whose structured play allowed themto penetrate the defense to set up straight kicking close to goals. Not being intimidated by their larger and more experiencedopponents, many junior players displayed indomitable strength of character in competing against someof the best in the league. On the day, sporadic bursts of gallant play were not enough to overcome the mountingdeficit, with the difference being 77 points at the final siren. This weekend’s match-up against the Broadview Tigers is proudly sponsored by Intec Group out at BroadviewOval (Poltawa Terrace), with the C-Grade running out at home. The away games have had great turnouts so farthis season and, even though there is a forecasted chance of rain, we again encourage all of our loyal fans andsupporters to grab their jackets and umbrellas and hit the road to cheer on the men in green!Prez précisA very big thank you to our wonderful supporter base who came out to cheer on our boys in the comfortable confinesof Haslam Oval. Our under-manned Senior side fought valiantly for all four quarters against a very competitivePNU outfit. However, despite some gutsy football from the team’s junior players (who defiantly showed they werenot intimidated in the least by the Falcon’s enforcers), Payneham proved they were the better side in this instance, running away as clear winners by game’s end.Further congratulations to both the Reserves and the C-Grade for their respective wins last week. Both teams areforming reputations within the league as the teams to beat this season, a badge they wear proudly as they gear upfor their fight against Broadview. This weekend delivers us the Intec Round 6 clash against the Tigers of Broadview. This is the first time since 1978that Broadview has not fielded a Division 1 side, so to say there isn’t a recent history between these two clubs is anunderstatement. However, we do know that they are a strong district team who share our values of club pride andsuccess. With both organisations focused squarely on one outcome - a big win - Saturday’s clash should providefor some exciting football action.Round 6 is sponsored by Intec Group who offer a wide range of IT consulting and strategy services. Intec assistsits customers by providing the best advice possible in regards to delivering enhanced business services throughthe effective utilisation of computer systems and technology. Round 4PEMBROKE 3.3 7.4 8.7 8.9.57PAYNEHAM 6.2 12.3 16.4 21.8.134Best PlayersWill Paley, Sam Fritsch, Alexander Dean, Fletcher DohertyGoal KickersWill Paley 7; Darren Brackenridge 1The Mehaffey ReportUnbeaten and top of the ladder side Payneham who have recruited very well in the off season visited us at home inthe clash of the local rivals. Due to injury and form we made six changes to last week’s side and welcomed EdJohnston-Cielens, Brad Ingerson and Nick McCann for their first games for the year. Unfortunately Payneham’sstronger bodies coupled with their disciplined and well structured game plan proved far too much for us over theday. We were completely dominated by them in the air. Our lack of dominant big men resulted in seeing them set upmany opportunities for their smaller men who were too good for our on-ball brigade. To our lads credit they continuedto battle well all day.The 1st quarter saw us start solidly but Payneham were able to pull away on the scoreboard after 15 minutes withsome strong forward marking setting up goals. Their crumbers were always working hard to get to the feet of theirbig men whilst ours were left wanting somewhat. With Will Paley dominant up forward we were able to keep withinstriking distance at quarter time.Payneham jumped out of the blocks early in the 2nd quarter to race away to a seven goal lead but some terrifictackling pressure witnessed us again fight back to be five goals down at half time and in with a chance. This wasour best period of the game. The major problem was that we were winning our fair share of the ruck duels but wereonce again being beaten at clearances. This is one aspect of the game we need to continue to work on.Unfortunately we started to tire in the second half and the difference in strength, physicality and experience sawPayneham race away to a very easy win. The statistics of the game showed their dominance:Clearances 15 - 29 (we only count “clear” clearances) Inside 35’s 27 – 49Tackles 35—disappointingly 14 players accumulated 9 between them whilst the other 7 players had 24 between them—an unbalanced statistic that we need to address.Special mentions in the statistics area to Charles Canny who lead the way with 6 tackles and Nick McCann in hisfirst game for the year who had 4 tackles, 2 clearances and 5 contested possessions

Will Paley must get huge credit for his effort up forward kicking 7 of our 8 goals in anoutstanding effort. He has grown into the dual vice-captaincy role extremely well. SamFritsch again lead from the front and was always in and under trying to win the football,Alexander Dean who gave us some good rebound from half back and Fletcher Dohertywho in only his 2 nd game out of school went in hard at the ball and showed he will be aquality player in the future. It was difficult to find outstanding players after that Angus Berry started to get back to some confidence and form,Shane Bracegirdle fought hard and Darren Brackenridge started to show just a small portion of what he is capableof. Battling against huge odds Edward Johnston-Cielens and Will Madsen did their best all day in ruck.I do not like making excuses for injuries, it gives opportunities for younger players to learn against bigger andstronger opposition which will hold the club in good stead in the future. Our reserves and C grade sides are goingalong beautifully which is already showing our recruiting efforts have paid dividends and we must continue to workon this area. It is however difficult for us to get elite players to the Club as we do not pay players which means wehave to work a bit harder and teach our young group to work together for each other and get the best out of themselves. This takes time so stick with us as I assure you this group will prosper in the future. Already we have seen34 players play in the seniors this year and that has got to be a long term positive for us.Chris MehaffeySeniors Coach

Reserves ResultsRound 3Pembroke Kings 12-05-77 def Payneham Norwood Union 9-7-61Best PlayersSam Franklin, Alexander Catford, Luke Madsen, Scott Fischer, Tom EvansGoal KickersBlake Sanders, Matthew Willis 3; Jake Rollins 2; Scott Fischer, Jake Lowe, Luke Madsen, Michael Walsh 1The Ingerson ReportThe reserves were prepared for a tough game last week against Payneham and that is what we encountered. Wewere third and Payneham forth on the ladder going into the game, so we were expecting a challenging match toget the points. The game started at a hectic pace. I think it was possibly the best first quarter of a reserves game I have seen withthe ball racing up and down the ground and with both sides playing very skilful football. It was even at quarter timeand Payneham got a bit of an edge during the second quarter, leading by one goal at the main break. All of theguys knew we would have to keep at it and I re-iterated at half time that we needed to play four quarters of qualityand intense pressured football to win the game. The third quarter was again tight but I sensed we were getting ontop. At three quarter time I said to the guys that if they kept the pressure on and remained hard at the footy, wewould come out on top. That is exactly what happened and we were able to kick 3 quick goals to create a four goalmargin that broke the spirit of the opposition.Sam Franklin returned from injury and was sensational all day. His attack on the footy and hard ball gets led theway for us and his possessions around the packs put us in the prime position most of the time. Alex Catford playedin the centre all day and also showed his class, giving us plenty of drive. Luke Madsen played his best game of theyear in ruck, taking some good marks around the ground and Scott Fisher continued his improved form as an onballergiving good drive around the packs. Matt Willis and Blake Sanders kicked 3 goals each and deserve a specialmention. The next 4 weeks are going to be a good challenge for the reserves and will give us a good indication of what wemight be able to achieve this year. We play the 2 bottom sides (Broadview and Kilburn) and the 2 top sides(Adelaide Uni and PHOS Camden). Our goal is to win at least 3 of those which would set us up at the turn of theseason. But lets focus on one week at a time and lets turn our attention to performing strongly against Broadviewthis week.Phil IngersonReserves Coach

C Grade ResultsRound 3Pembroke Kings 13-6-84 def Payneham Norwood Union 9-5-53Best PlayersCharles Bryce, Ned Harmer, Jack Berry, Greg Furness, Gavin Jones, Leigh McInerney,Sam Worrall-ThompsonGoal KickersJames Hall, Greg Furness 3; Tom Brown, Sam Worrall-Thompson 2; Luke Madsen, Henry Kurtze, Luke Evans 1The Crowhust ReportThe mighty C-Kings traveled a solid 2.3km on the “Crodeo” Odometer to Payneham on the weekend. It was evidentthat, unlike past weeks, our opposition were there to play football and wanted to win. They had done their R&D and spent hours perusing the Internet over Windows ‘95. They planned to tag they Kirkwood,Page, Worrall-Thompson and Hall. Unfortunately they were smacked in the face when to their surprise theprior two were not playing, the latter two had changed numbers from last week, and no one on the Pembroke teamcould remember who they were and so couldn’t tell the opposition their numbers. They were also shocked when they asked me how we beat Eastern Park by so much and I replied: “Yeah mate, they only had 15 players. Otherwise it would have been a close one I think”. Their coach returned to the roomsready to give us a pouncing, but we came out of the firing block with a few secret weapons.Neddy Harmer (recently a father, congratulations Neddy), Jack Berry (saves lives instead of playing reserves) andBrycey (newly proclaimed C-Grade legend) dominated all over the ground right from the first bounce. Harmer wastagged very quickly but some master-craft coaching maneuvers meant that Neddy was still able dominate in themiddle whilst forcing Payneham’s best player to stick solidly in his shadow. With Smerdon being recruited to the reserves, the leadership reins were handed over to Sam Worrall-Thompsonwho showed his pure class, while leading the boys on the field. He helped out with some of the coaching maneuversaround the ground and was influential, as always. The Mighty C-Kings, amid all of the new recruits, were down at the two earlier breaks. Payneham has older playerswho had all ‘been around the block’ (and lost their hair while doing it) and their nerve and knowledge of the gameseemed to be keeping them in the game. Fortunately, the C-Grade fitness freaks in residence really came throughwith the goods in the third term. Payneham held their two goal lead briefly in the third before the fresh legs from theKings pranced around the ground and dominated all over the ground. Leigh McInerney was a dead-set god senddown in full back, saving countless goal attempts and making spoil after spoil. His nerve under pressure meant thathe was able to run the ball out of the backlines and set up a few of our goals too.At the third break the King-Men were two men down due to an uncanny incident where magically there werethree players lying motionless on the ground. Condolences to Andy Sellars, who was swiftly taken to SportsMedand has suffered some hairline fractures in his leg. He will be sorely missed from the team, but we are told he willbe returning in 4 weeks.

Although we were two men down at this break, we were one goal up. The King’s fitnessreally started to shine through late in this quarter and during the last quarter. We justhad more run in our legs as we kept being first to each contest around the ground. The King men onslaught in the last quarter found us 4 goal victors over the Falcons. It wasan awesome game of football to be involved in, probably helped by us winning. We know webeat them because we played 4 quarters of solid, hard, intelligent and talented football. It’s hard to choose best players when you win by 4 goals in a crucial match against your rivals who are (were) atthe same position as you on the ladder. Every player did his part and helped the C-Kings to securing their best winfor the season.Next week we play Broadview – and it is a massive match, especially for the C-Grade since our Team Managerand Goal Umpire (The lovely Maxine & Terry Harding) are life members at Broadview and have instructed us thatwe MUST win. Broadview have only lost to PHOS and Flinders Park (the two teams ranked above us on the ladder)and so they will be a very competitive team who we will have to be in fine form to conquer.I look forward to another enjoyable victory next week.Mark CrowhurstC Grade Coach

Kings ConfidentialThe OracleGood to be back Kings. Yours truly has been on the sidelines and missing from thispublication for a couple of weeks as a result of an unfortunate incident down at FlindersPark but I am now fighting fit and the paper bag has been well and truly been put back on.Whilst the Seniors are fighting hard they aren't getting over the line at the moment but I am surethat this will all change for the balance of the season. However, it is pleasingto see Phil " Malthouse" Ingerson leading his troops in the Reservesjust like his look-a-like (don't you reckon?) to consecutive victories in recentweeks. I look forward to some Confucius like words of wisdom fromPhil Malthouse in the coming weeks at the Kensi and hope that his reignin the Reserves is akin to the Malthouse years at West Coast rather thanthe Colly-wobbles. Although I love the parallel between Ingerson andMalthouse, I must confess that I did not immediately make the connectionbetween the two super coaches. Long time supporter of the Kings andsometime supporter of Phil Ingerson, Simon Berry was muttering somethingabout the Malthouse likeness at a home game a couple of weeksago so credit where credit is due. Ingo, you are an inspiration.Well done to Mr Versatile, former President and premiership captainDavid Charles Dall on his debut as the C grade umpire against the friendlyfellows from Payneham. According to David, "it was a pretty easy job as Iam supremely fit at the moment". He was also seen to be dishing outsledges to all and sundry who dared to defy his judicious decision making.Evidence of said sledges can be seen in the attached photograph takenby his biggest fan (who shall remained unnamed but let's call him "CrazyEyes"). Seriously though, well done to Dally for putting his hand up to do athankless task. I encourage all players and spectators who get a little hotunder the collar with umpiring decisions to have a go.
