If you need samples your localdistributor will be pleased to supply them.Special shaped bricksThe full range of special shaped bricks to BS 4729 is available to matchmost of our products, and non-standard shapes can be made to meet specifi capplications.A selection of popular special shapes is also available ex-stock includingcommonly used non-standard specials to our own specifi cation (pages 71-81).Quality assuranceAll bricks manufactured in the UK are produced under BS EN ISO 9001Quality Management Systems independently certifi ed by CICS and many arekitemarked to BS EN 771-1:2003Colour consistencyState-of-the-art manufacturing technology allows us to optimise colourconsistency, to minimise the problems of colour banding in fi nished brickwork,although we would not discourage established good site practice of mixing froma minimum of 3 packs.PackagingMost products are strap-banded and packed in heavy duty plastic sleevesfor maximum protection in transit and on site.4

Guide to technical dataAll our facing bricks aremanufactured in accordancewith the European StandardSpecification for clay masonryunits, BS EN 771-1, published in2003. (British Standard 3921: 1985,Specification for clay bricks, wasformally withdrawn in April 2006and specific terms & definitionsare no longer applicable).This guide confirms productclassifications and terminologyin relation to European Standardtest methods.Size ToleranceBS EN 771-1 : 2003 requires a manufacturer to declare aparticular size category for each product based on individual brickmeasurements. To determine the Tolerance applicable, measurements,using accurate instrumentation, are taken for each of 10 bricks sampled randomly from the consignment againsttheir length, width and height. The mean fi gure is calculated by addition of each specifi c measurement (for heighttwo measurements in transverse directions are taken to provide an average), divided by 10. This fi gure should notdeviate from the work size by the declared ( ) Tolerance category shown in Table 1. Useful on-site guidanceAs stated opposite, product Standard BS EN 771-1 : 2003 requiresa manufacturer to declare a particular size category, based on individualbrick measurements.The use of delicate instruments is not practical however when dealing withissues on site, and in 2003 the British Standards Institution published a documentsuitable for on-site appraisal of brick units. This Publicly Available Specifi cation70 (PAS 70), provides both guidance on appearance of facing bricks andpractical on-site testing methods for size, using a conventional retractable steelrule as a viable alternative to the long jaw calliper method referred to in theEuropean Standard.PAS 70 has two procedures for measurement, the simpler of which(Procedure A), is used to determine the size tolerance of the brick consignmentdelivered to site.10 individual bricks are selected at random from the consignment. Fordetermination of tolerance, bricks are set out on suitable level ground as illustratedto the left and the overall measurement taken for the 10 bricks. Procedure B isused to determine the range, or difference between the smallest and largestbricks within the selected sample of 10 bricks.Two measurements should be taken for each dimension, (as illustrated)to provide a mean fi gure for each brick. AppearanceBSI document PAS 70 provides general guidance on appearance.In practice it is not possible to write a universally applicable defi nition ofacceptable appearance of facing brickwork, as this will vary signifi cantly witheach type of clay brick.
