Project name: Institutional Map of the UAE
Emirates Wildlife Society is interested in having an intern work in the Institutional
Map of the UAE, for the Policy Unit under the supervision of Paola Ferreira (Policy
Advisor). The involvement of an intern in such a project would offer him/her a
unique opportunity to learn about the environmental institutional makeup of the
UAE and understand the role of the main institutions.
The project
The environmental field in the UAE is developing at a rapid rate both within the government
and through private sector and civil society initiatives. This has resulted in a complex mix of
institutions and organizations that undertake, or claim to undertake, an ample variety of
environmental activities and projects. There is no organized way to access information about
these institutions and companies. This project will address this problem.
The Policy Unit of EWS-WWF is developing an Institutional list of organizations and
institutions in the UAE with responsibilities, projects, activities or initiatives in the
environmental field. The purpose of this project is twofold:
(1) Develop a basic list of one hundred institutions and organizations with
environmental actions in the UAE, detailing what activities they are undertaking and how
they relate to programs and core capabilities of EWS-WWF. The info for these organizations
will be organized according to the nature of the organization and will also include their
scope, contacts and institutional dependence. This list will be useful for all EWS-WWF
programs and core areas to identify possible institutional partners or funders.
(2) Develop a shorter strategic list of organizations that are relevant from a policy
development and influencing perspective. This list will provide insightful information that
will be helpful from the policy analysis, development and implementation standpoint.
The role of the intern
The intern will assist the Policy Advisor in completing the basic list and gathering information
to populate the data base. This will require extensive internet research as well as
participating in interviews to gather the required information from EWS staff and other
strategic persons upon direction by the Policy Advisor. The intern will also have to review
internal EWS data bases.

The intern will also assist the Policy advisor about key inputs to be added to the strategic list.
It will include an initial research to identify key actors in government and the private sector
relevant from the policy perspective.
Requirements
The intern needs to be a highly motivated student that is organized and detailed oriented.
She/he needs to have good use of excel and word.
