Manager Amy says that the popularityof Latte Mei overseas motivated herto open her own café here on Dundas.“This is something you couldn’t reallyfind in Toronto,” she says, referring to theshop’s signature savoury cream teas.While the café does offer other optionssuch as slushes, milk teas, smoothiesand more, Latte Mei’s savoury creamsare certainly front and centre, quite literally– they’re advertised on four hugebanners in the store).Amy explains that these drinks ($3.99-$4.49) are all about the mix of sweet andsalty. “This cream is not like a cream likeyou’ll find at other places in the city. It’ssavoury – not really sweet. It sort of hasa cheesy taste.”Customers can pick from one of avariety of teas imported from Taiwan asthe base, including green, wheat, brownrice and black tea. After specifying thesweetness, the drink is topped with thefresh cream and dusted with a sprinkle ofgreen tea powder.“You don’t drink it with a straw,” Amyexplains, adding that a sip from the rimensures a good balance of cream and tea.The optimal drinking time, she says, is anhour.I decide to try the savoury cream greentea, and despite Amy’s warning, I stillsort of expect more of a sweet whippedcream. But this cream is much thickerthan your <strong>average</strong> whipped cream, andsalty rather than sweet. A big sip yieldsa good balance with the cool, sweet tea,and certainly unlike most cream toppingsyou’ll find at conventional coffeeshops.But if you aren’t ready to take the savoury-teaplunge just yet, Latte Mei hasa full menu of other options, includingthe rosewater juice and basil seed combothat’s my personal favourite. The basilseeds become gelatinous in the drink, offeringa little bit of a bubble tea texturewithout having to swallow huge blobs oftapioca.Latte Mei also makes hot waffles toorder (with pearl sugar – the best part)and offers seating for about 10 peoplealong with free Wi-Fi. The café is opendaily during the week from 11 a.m. to 11p.m., and on weekends from 11 a.m. tomidnight.
