Another advantage is that while the people are eating, theleaders can begin the challenge and organizational part <strong>of</strong>the evening’s evangelistic outreach. A meal was used inthe great evangelistic program conducted by J. FrankNorris in the first half <strong>of</strong> the 20th century. He pastoredtwo churches simultaneously from 1934 to 1947, FirstBaptist Church <strong>of</strong> <strong>For</strong>t Worth, Texas, and Temple BaptistChurch <strong>of</strong> Detroit, Michigan. Through the efforts <strong>of</strong>Norris and his co-worker, Dr. Louis Entzminger, theSunday Schools <strong>of</strong> these two congregations became thelargest in the world at that time (15,000 and 10,000respectively). In his memoirs, Entzminger wrote: “Fromthe human standpoint the secret <strong>of</strong> the growth <strong>of</strong> thesechurches may be summed up in one word‘Visitation’” (The J. Frank Norris I Have Known for 34Years, p. 255).The men went out on Monday evenings, coming directlyto the church from work at 6 p.m., where they wereserved a warm supper prepared by the church ladies. At6:30 they were given cards and went out to visit homestwo by two. At 9 p.m. they would meet back at thechurch to give reports.The women went out on Thursday mornings, gathering atthe church at 9:30, visiting in homes until 12:30, thenmeeting back at the church for lunch and fellowship,followed by reports on the visitation and a short messageby Norris.Those two churches, in turn, produced dozens <strong>of</strong> otherchurches. By the year <strong>of</strong> Norris’s death (1952), FirstBaptist <strong>of</strong> <strong>For</strong>t Worth had established more than 20churches in and around that one city alone. The same wastrue <strong>of</strong> Temple Baptist Church <strong>of</strong> Detroit.
