Visitation ProgramMiscellaneousAn organized visitation program is an important part of achurch’s outreach, because it is the only means ofsystematically going house to house throughout thecommunity with the gospel. It is not usually the mostfruitful part of a church’s evangelistic ministry, though,and should not be looked upon as the be-all, end-all ofsuch. Door-to-door visitation is simply one more meansof getting out the gospel and making new contacts.In one independent Baptist church a study was done overa nine-year period and it was found that not one personwas saved and assimilated into the church as a result ofthe visitation program, whereas some other methods ofevangelism were fruitful.Effective door-to-door visitation ministries divide thecommunity into sections and carefully keep track ofwhich areas have been covered.Special care must be made to follow up on any contactsthat express interest in the gospel. Visits should continueuntil contact can be made with someone in each home.One plan that many churches have used is to distribute acopy of John/Romans to each home. Included with theJohn/Romans booklet can be an invitation to conduct aBible study in the home or an invitation to take acorrespondence course (or both). One church distributesa packet which describes its bus ministry, its services,and includes a John/Romans and an invitation to take aseries of Bible study lessons either in the home or bymail.
