“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, andthey follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; andthey shall never perish, neither shall any man pluckthem out of my hand” (John 10:27, 28).God promises eternal life to those who are born again,but He certainly does not promise eternal life to thosewho merely pray a sinner’s prayer. Verses 27 and 28 inJohn 10 are connected. Verse 28 says Christ gives eternallife to His sheep, but verse 27 says His sheep followHim. Verse 27 is the evidence of salvation, while verse28 is the eternal blessing of salvation. You cannot takethe promise of verse 28 unless you display the evidenceof verse 27.Consider also the following passage:“And you, that were sometime alienated andenemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hathhe reconciled, In the body of his flesh through death,to present you holy and unblameable andunreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faithgrounded and settled, and be not moved away fromthe hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, andwhich was preached to every creature which isunder heaven; whereof I Paul am made aminister” (Colossians 1:21-23).Those who are reconciled to Christ and who thereforehave eternal life are those who continue in the faith andare not moved from the gospel. Those who merely pray asinner’s prayer and do not continue in the faithdemonstrate that they have never been born again.Consider Hebrews 6:9-11:“But, beloved, we are persuaded better things ofyou, and things that accompany salvation, thoughwe thus speak. For God is not unrighteous to forgetyour work and labour of love, which ye have showedtoward his name, in that ye have ministered to thesaints, and do minister. And we desire that every216
