Reviving a Church That IsLukewarm Toward EvangelismIt is a sad but common thing for churches to growlukewarm in their zeal for bringing the unsaved to JesusChrist. The church at Laodicea was already lukewarmbefore the death of its apostolic founders (Revelation 3).We should not be surprised when we find a church in aspiritual decline, but we also should not be lethargicabout it. Fruitful church life requires continual spiritualrevival, and the Lord Jesus Christ is ready and able torevive His people."Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen,and repent, and do the first works; or else I will comeunto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestickout of his place, except thou repent" (Revelation2:5)."As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: bezealous therefore, and repent" (Revelation 3:19).What can a pastor do if he finds that his church hasbecome lukewarm in the matter of soul winning?We are focusing on the pastor's role because he alone hasthe authority and position necessary to bring church-widechanges. This is not to say that pastors alone areresponsible for the evangelistic zeal of a church. Theresponsibility is upon the shoulder's of every born againChristian. After reviewing this article, one pastor offeredthis wise observation: “The pastor must have thecooperation of the people to do his job. If they realizedthey have a HUGE impact on how we [pastors] feel andact, more people would do a better job!”175
