The Rodhocetus, a supposedmissing link in whale evolution, is depicted in museumsand textbooks as a creature that has some whale-likefeatures such as a long whalish snout, a whalish tale orfluke, and flippers but with four legs, two short ones inthe back and longer ones in the front. The legs werealleged to have flippers. While filming for thisdocumentary, the executive producer noticed adiscrepancy between drawings of Rodhocetus and theactual fossils, as there are no fossils for the fluke or forthe flippers, the very things that are used as evidence thatthis creature is a missing link. An on-screen interviewwith Dr. Phil Gingerich, the scientist responsible for thediscovery and reconstruction of Rodhocetus, confirmedthat the reconstruction and drawings are merespeculation. He said, “We don’t have the tail inRodhocetus. We don’t know for certain whether it had aball vertebrate indicating a fluke or not. So I speculatedthat it might have had a fluke.” Gingerich alsoacknowledged that the flippers were drawn without fossilevidence, and it is no longer believed that Rodhocetushad flippers. Gingerich’s answers on camera weresurprising, since the museum’s drawings have flippers onthe creature.
