Then, in order that they not seek entertainment fromworldly influences in our church, or outside of thehome, we decided to buy a TV JUST to watch anoccasional Christian video. We felt that by settingstrict guidelines we could control the box. Boy, werewe wrong!First of all we found, besides watching onlyacceptable videos, we began watching the news. Inthe beginning we only watched really importantnews and didn’t watch on a daily basis. Then cameelections and we spent a few nights watching that.Soon we discovered an ‘innocent’ black and white50's series and found ourselves devoting ‘just’ a halfhour a night with that. The weather was added to ouracceptable list of what could be watched andoccasionally another thing or two would creep in.Still, we felt totally in control and no red flags werewaving before us regarding our TV watching habits.Then one night when all but my husband were inbed, he wanted to check to see what the weatherwould be the next day, as we had a family picnicplanned at a nearby lake. Half an hour later myhusband came into the bedroom, dropped to hisknees beside the bed and began to weep. I wasalarmed, but didn’t want to disturb him as he silentlywept and prayed. After a long time he climbed intobed, embraced me, and began to sob uncontrollably.He explained that he’d turned on the TV and whileflipping to check the weather had come acrosssomething totally unacceptable but that grabbed hisattention. He then confessed that he had allowedhimself to be drawn into lust and asked myforgiveness. He was so distraught over whateverhe’d watched that for two or three days he couldhardly eat and spent a lot of time in prayer.Meanwhile, our TV stayed off.Shortly after this, while I was out shopping with ourthree younger children, my husband came homeearly from work unexpectedly to find our oldestwatching (against the rules) a very worldly programobviously aimed at drawing the hearts and minds ofteens into sin. Again my husband wept and thatevening we had a major family conference. Myhusband took us through many Bible passages, both128
those which would warn against evil and aboutkeeping our hearts, separation, holy living, etc., ANDthose regarding our duties to preach the gospel toevery creature. He asked our forgiveness forallowing a TV into our home and gave pretty graphicdetails as to why he felt he had done wrong. Ourchildren were somber and we couldn’t tell what wasgoing on in their minds.The next evening, after supper my husband sat usall down and again confessed his wrong doing inregards to the TV. Again he spoke of our duty to tellour fellow man about the Lord. He brought anexcellent lesson to us all about hell and thenoutlined in great detail different ways we could beginto reach out to others to share the gospel to them.Then he threw it open to debate, asking the childrenwhat we should do. Do we keep the TV and continueto drift further and further from the Lord and fromcarrying out the Great Commission, or do we throwout the TV and earnestly seek to bring others toChrist? I knew my husband had fasted the last twodays and that he had experienced a tremendousrevival in his heart, but I was wondering how ourchildren would respond. The response was far morewonderful than I can describe. Our second daughterbegan to weep and explained that she’d beenpraying we would get rid of the TV as she knew itwas causing stumbling in her life and she wasn’t asclose to the Lord as she had been before. Our oldestson said basically the same. In fact, all of ourchildren without exception displayed a desire to getrid of the TV and to come closer as a family to theLord.The next day we all took the TV to the dump. It hadonly been in our home six months, but we had allnoticed the difference it had made.That night we began memorizing Scriptures togetheras a family. We have continued this practice nearlyevery night since and can recite all of 1 Peter, 1John, and major portions of Romans and the Gospelof John. But that’s only one tiny fruit of our ‘sacrifice’of the TV.129
