Historic Hoard RecoveredGary Smith of England (above) is allsmiles as he poses in April 2013 with ahoard of more than 200 Roman coins hefound with his Garrett EuroACE.He had spent the day detecting infarm fields that he had researched andthen obtained permission to hunt. “Asthe end of the day came near, I had justa pocket full of lead bits,” he said. “I waspretty well gutted in not finding a singlecoin.” Gary headed back toward his car.As he crossed one of the fields en route,he decided to turn his detector back on.He picked up a good signal as he waswalking back. Digging down just a coupleof inches, he pulled out a Roman radiate,a small bronze coin. “I was happy,”he said. Gary proceeded to work his EuroACEslower around the area and he wasrewarded with four more Roman coins.“My EuroACE was on Zero Modewith the first three notches taken off foriron discrim,” he related. “The coins cameup the scale on about notch ten out of thetwelve, giving it a lovely typical bing-alingnoise.”4Gary returned to the area the next daywith new enthusiasm. His detector wassinging as he began digging coins rightand left. He marked off a square area anddecided it was time to properly report hisfind. Gary had about 50 Roman coinswhen he contacted the land owner andalso his local FLO (Finds Liaison Officer). The FLO advised him not to dig anydeeper than a few inches until they couldinspect the site properly. Gary took offwork the next day and met the FLO andan archaeologist. At the end of three days,he had recovered just over 200 Romanbronze coins, some silver plated. Theyranged in date from the middle of the 2ndCentury and almost to the 3rd Century. He posed for photos of his Romanhoard. “By the looks of it, it was a vessel orbag of some kind that has been destroyedwith the ploughing over the years.”The coins are now with Gary’s FLOfor proper evaluation and cleaning. Garyhas naturally become much more excitedabout metal detecting, a hobby that hebegan only six months ago. He plans todo some water hunting this summer, sohe is now the proud owner of an AT ProInternational.Gary reports that he is pleased with hisAT Pro’s power at pulling out additionalfinds in heavily hunted areas. He addedthis follow-up in May: “I went back overmy hoard area over the last few weeks andmanaged to squeeze out another 90 coins, making the total about 300 now!”These are several of the Roman coins Gary continues to find at thehoard site with his AT Pro International. Many of the coins have beenstuck together when he unearths them. The Garrett Searcher Summer 2013 Edition www.garrett.com
