Pervious studies of the volcanoindicated probable occurrence of a hightemperature geothermal resource (Omenda etal., 2000). The youngest eruptive activity isabout 1400 BP. Surface manifestations aremainly steaming grounds at a temperature of88 o C. The Government of Kenya and KenGencarried out surface studies between January andMay 2004 in an area of about 900 km 2(Mungania et al., 2004). Integrated results ofgeological, geophysical, geochemical and heatloss surveys indicate existence of a hot, ductileand dense body under the caldera.
