It included fourheats and was sponsored by the Departmentof Parks and Recreation andMcDonald's of Waipahu .Then on March 19 was the tenthannual Oahu <strong>Kite</strong> Flying Contest ."Over 1000 people came to view andparticipate," Beverly said . "The daywas warm and sunny, with 20 to 30mile-per-hour winds in the morningand 25 to 40-mile-per-hour afternoonwinds ." Besides the usual help of theDepartment of Parks and Recreationof Honolulu and the Lions Club ofMoanalua, three new sponsors werepersuaded to participate by ChairmanDon Fujii . There were four categoriesfor the two age divisions plus kitefighting for the seniors, won by WayneBaldwin and Alfred Chang . "This yearTop : Patricio Gongot's beauty.Above : Winners all -Wayne Baldwin,Patricio Gongot, Alfred and Vincent Chang .the Most Beautiful <strong>Kite</strong> event brought87 competitors, mostly University ofHawaii students and Hawaii AKA'ers ."Winners were Patricio Gongot, first,and Wayne Baldwin, second .ILLINOISBill Temple, reporting from Chicago,said the seventh annual Amelia EarhartMemorial <strong>Kite</strong> Fly was calledoff because of postponement and lackof participants .When he wrote, Bill was lookingforward to the "big one," WINDRadio's <strong>Kite</strong> Fly, on April 24 . A 25-foot delta made byAnsel Toney was demonstrated beforethe competition . Toney, 89, has beencelebrated recently in an AP wireservice story and on the "Who's Who"television show . (A profile of him willappear in the next issue of <strong>Kite</strong> <strong>Lines</strong> .)LOUISIANAThe fifth annual New Orleans <strong>Kite</strong>Festival took place on March 20 atAudubon Park, with thousands ofpeople there . Henry H . Boutwellreports that "The wind was blowingout over the river until it was timefor the contest to start . Then the winddied out' to one of those light breezesthat move the leaves on a tree sometimes." Boutwell's own "Little Hazel,"a 15 x 30 foot plastic delta, won handsdown in the Largest <strong>Kite</strong> event becauseit flew-pulled up on 450 feet of 425-lb-test nylon line . Smallest <strong>Kite</strong> waswon by Connie Thompson flyinganother Boutwell kite, which was oneof the few kites to fly in the light breeze .MARYLANDFebruary 13 was the date of the Maryland<strong>Kite</strong> Society's well-attendedannual meeting, held at the MarylandScience Center in Baltimore's InnerHarbor. Members were pleased to bevisited there by W. Bruwer Van Graanof South Africa, touring America byway of England, where he had purchaseda Flexifoil . The unusual kiteattracted much interest during the flybefore the meeting . Blustery weathercreated mishaps, though, as Bruwer'sdiary described later in his entry forFebruary 13 :"Bill Bigge's Wright Flyer wrappeditself around a tree within seconds,kites broke lines, kites fell in the harborand a large Parafoil [ Curtis Marshall's]tangled on a yacht mast . Chaos! Everybodythen went off to the Center forthe meeting and buffet . A kite auctionfollowed where Pete lanuzzi boughteverything that remotely resembleda kite ."The main business of the meetingwas accomplished : election of officers .Ted Manekin is the new ExecutiveSecretary, while Pete lanuzzi andCynthia Kobitz continue as Treasurerand Secretary respectively, and Marland<strong>Kite</strong> Festival Co-Chairmen areRick Kinnaird and Mel Govig . Aneditor for the newsletter is beingsought to succeed Valerie Govig, whonow edits <strong>Kite</strong> <strong>Lines</strong> for AKA . Planswere discussed for the Maryland <strong>Kite</strong>Festival on April 30 . Cooperation of theCity's Bureau of Recreation and theMaryland Science Center was assured,and funding was earned through theSociety's promotion work for a largelocal department store . Ann Kurtz, ofthe center's exhibits department,enlisted Society help for an importantkite show running from mid-Aprilthrough July .On April 2 in Cambridge, MD, about125 youngsters bundled up in threateningweather to fly at a kite contest .Chun King kites (modified cobras)were provided by RJR Foods, Inc . Eachyoungster was given 400 feet of line,and winners were those who let outtheir line fastest . Cambridge Mayor AlAtkinson presented trophies in threeage groups .High spirits in Cambridge, MD .MONTANASteve Smith reports :"<strong>Kite</strong>s, eh? I haven't flown one sinceI was a kid ."
