It has been designedto be economic to purchase, yet still provide all the featuresnecessary to produce a modern die-cut blank in an everincreasing competitive environment. The Wingrinding device (based on a reliable solutionsuccessfully applied for a number of years on standard Wintek/SUNRISE converting lines) allows grinding of the RDC anvilcylinder to be undertaken quickly – during the time necessaryfor an order change or with the machine running. Morefrequently removing a minimum of polyurethane across thefull width of the anvil cylinder results in extended blanket life, while keeping die-cutting quality and precision constant. TheThe Corrugator / Apr. - Jun. 200831

As with all YSF machinery, the die cut units are of a robustand strong construction with the die drum ground, polishedand fully chromed. The anvil life and accuracy is prolongedwith lateral oscillation and machines can be supplied with eitheranvil synchronisation or equalisation. Anvil life and accuracy isfurther enhanced by optional anvil trimming systems – twosystems are available, either knife or abrasion. The die drum can be offset laterally ± 20mm. Thisadjustment enhances register control and reduces the need toremount the cutting die. All models are supplied with internalpin stripping as standard – however, conventional ejectionrubber stripping can also be utilised.Linear encoders are used to control die-cut pressure andregister is also CNC controlled. Both these axis are adjustableto within ±0.1mm. CNC control is via touch screen PLC andon the Super S type machine can also be controlled via acentral PC touch screen station.Elan accuracyThe Mitsubishi second generation ELAN is a 66" rotarydie-cutter that can handle the most intricate shapes and thesmallest cut-outs and can even make reverse matrix scores athigh speeds of up to 12,000sph. The large cylinder, 1,675mmin circumference, provides strength to help minimise cylinderbend from the weight at die-cutting. It therefore combines thedie-cutting accuracy and scoring capability of a flatbed withthe set-up ease and speed of a rotary system. A stainless steelsheet, mounted on the anvil cylinder in combination with thecutting die, eliminates the need for the extensive set-upnecessary with the traditional steel anvil designs. Using thesemi-hard anvil and cutting die together allows reverse scoringto be pre-set.Sheet feed is accomplished by a lead edge feeder. Smoothsheet feeding ensures that double wall, soft sheets, E-flute andeven cross corrugated board is handled at high speed. Vacuumpulls each sheet on to a bottom grate and feeder wheels. Thefeeder wheels accelerate to reach the same speed as the feedroll and the sheet is then fed. The lead edge feeder eliminatesslippage caused by the corrugator score as well as slippage atstart-up. Paper dust removal is standard within the feed unit.Vacuum removes paper dust from the surface and the cut edgeof the sheet, effectively preventing problems during printing, resulting in sharper printing and less downtime for clean up. Avacuum belt type transfer conveyor is available between theprinting and die-cut unit.Ink is dried as it passes between units eliminating ink smear, smudging and soiling in the high-speed die-cutting process. A4 wide vacuum belt system provides stable transport. A bottomprinting system achieves top quality accurate printing even athigh speeds. A dust purge system blows air into the hopperencasing the ink roll to prevent dust from degrading the printing.ANCILLIARIES AND RETROFITSWide range of toolingNorthampton, England-based Mansfield Board MachineryLtd. provide a range of tooling to support die-cuttingapplications. These include polyurethane rotary die-cut anvils, die cut hand hole tooling for printer slotters (Dovey), diecutstitch flap tooling for printer slotters (Tabtool) and chase plateprotection sheets. (cont. from page 35)Under three minutesCUE Inc is a leading manufacturer of urethane anvil coversfor rotary diecutting. The company traces it roots to thepioneering days of cast urethanes in 1957 and manufacturedone of the first urethane anvil covers for rotary diecutting in1962. Today the company is ISO 9001-2000 certified. The company’s Timesaver anvil covers providesconverters with a consistent urethane die-cutting surface.Timesaver’s design starts with a solid-steel backing that ensuresa precise fit and dimensional stability throughout the life of theblanket. Next, a solid steel hold-down angle and an exclusivesolid steel lock bar are welded to the metal backing in aproprietary process that ensures a precise fit. Highest qualityurethane is chemically bonded to the metal backing and thecover surface is then ground to a consistent thickness andtrimmed to an exact width. It’s exclusive solid steel lock bar fills the die-cutter keywaywith metal, providing a consistent cutting surface for the entirecircumference of the cylinder. The operator can then useminimal die impression depth for clean cuts – one of the primaryways of maximising product quality and blanket longevity. The Timesaver was designed to minimise machinedowntime during blanket rotations without modifying the diecutterin any way. There are no systems to buy, so there is nocapital expenditure required. A video is available demonstratinga complete Timesaver Anvil Cover rotation on an unmodifieddie-cutter in under three minutes.High Efficiency dryersHigh quality and high production diecutting operationscontinue to turn to the high efficiency flexo drying and curingsystems of JB Machinery. Specifically designed for thecorrugated industry, these IR drying and UV curing systemscontinue to gain worldwide acceptance – currently JB has over500 installations in 27 countries around the world.Combining optimisedperformance with anergonomic design to offergreater accessibility, easiermaintenance and enhancedsafety, JB gives users theability to run faster, reducemulti-pass jobs to a singlepass, provide higher qualitygraphics and create value for their customers. Drying alsomaximises the ability to use high holdout substrates like claycoated, high-graphics sheets, without compromising runspeeds. These high efficiency IR inter-station flexo dryers and finalflexo dryers increase productivity, provide higher qualitygraphics options and expand the capability of the flexooperation. Interstation flexo dryers make it possible to dry eachor selected colours before the next is applied, eliminatingghosting, smearing, optimising colour brightness and gloss withincreases in productivity and product value. Final flexo dryersincrease productivity by drying over-print varnish or a finalcolour prior to die-cutting and or finishing operations;eliminating offsetting onto anvil covers, marking and smearingon transportation belts, optimising colour brightness and glosswith dramatic increases in productivity and product value. Thecompany’s UV flexo curing systems increase productivity, product offerings and product value. The systems make itpossible to cure UV over-print varnishes at maximised machinespeeds providing extreme scuff, rub and water resistance, boxstrength and ‘wet look’ gloss levels.Positive feedbackFollowing Sandvik DieCutting Products’ launch of its rangeof special hard edge coated rules, designated Sandvik DieflexPlatinum, feedback from customers is extremely positive. Alltrials and customer orders are supporting the claim that, although initially more expensive, the longer life of DieflexPlatinum proves the life cycle cost argument. It makes the newrules a real alternative for high volume, quality applications, such as food packaging and thecoated boards of top of the range, high end packaging. As the coating is very thin, thereis no rounding of the edges. SandvikDieflex Platinum cuts toughermaterials at a lower cutting pressurewith improved release properties. This reduces dusting problems andat the same time gives excellent andeven cutting results on long runs.Yet, even combined with the edgeand body coating hardness, it retains its extreme bendability. Also new from Sandvik is an anticorrosion coating acrossits range of flatbed and rotary die-cutting products. The speciallacquer-based formula, the result of a substantial investmentby the company, protects the product both during shipmentto customers and throughout its operational life, eliminatingthe risk of rust formation.New exit linePara of Italy has developed a new product – a fully automaticexit system for diecutting lines. Two installations are alreadyworking well in Italian boxplants. One has been installed at afactory in Italy that produces board for fruit boxes – theautomatic RDC exit line includes breaker, 180° layer turnerand palletiser and it is fitted behind a Martin DRO. The othersystem has been installed at a plant owned by a multi-nationalgroup, located in northern Italy, running behind a Corpartrotary die-cutter. Both installations have been in place for 12months and are operating well. The Corrugator / Apr. - Jun. 200839
