It lasted until about 1963 when Adenaueraccepted de Gaulle’s veto on British accession to the EEC and helped allay the possibilityof complete French isolation within the Community by signing the Elyséetreaty. 1 There was some considerable protest by the Bundestag, the Federation ofGerman Industry (BDI) and in particular from the minister of economics LudwigErhard whose state-secretary Alfred Müller-Armack resigned in frustration overthis policy outcome and the ambiguous position taken for a number of years by thefederal chancellor 2 . Yet Adenauer’s collusion with de Gaulle in obstructing the Britishfree trade area proposal and the British application for EEC-membership wassuccessful despite overwhelming and ever increasing political support for theseprojects in the Federal Republic 3 .1.
