Asmany graduates discover, salaried opportunities within the non-governmental sector arelimited, consequently competition for such positions is great. By gaining valid workexperience within Saferworld, graduates can increase their potential for employmentconsiderably, while helping Saferworld combat the root causes of international conflict.Saferworld’s Advocacy team leads the organisation’s engagement with relevant governmentand parliamentary institutions in the UK, EU and globally. Our Communications team leadsand supports Saferworld’s communications activities to demonstrate the value and success ofthe organisation’s work and approach to key audiences.This internship will work with both teams to develop their work. Our UK Advocacy Team hasrecently gained agreement on a new strategy covering our thematic and country-focusedadvocacy. The Communications Team will also soon begin working to a new communicationsstrategy which will cover both our external and internal communications. This internshiptherefore presents an ideal opportunity to contribute to the delivery of both strategies anddevelop an understanding of best practice in both advocacy and communications work. Thefocus of the internship will be 70% advocacy work, 30% communications work.SPECIFIC TASKSWorking with the UK Advocacy Coordinator to implement the new UK advocacystrategy through the development and delivery of a UK Advocacy Action PlanWorking with the Communications Coordinator and Communications Officer toimplement the new Communications Strategy through the development and deliveryof a Communications Action PlanResearching and writing governmental and parliamentary briefs and submissions


Researching and writing pieces for Saferworld’s external and internalcommunications including for the Saferworld website, supporter newsletter e-newsletter, activity reports and annual reviewPreparing background research material on parliamentary and government figuresand key journalistsOversee and organise press cuttingsEnsuring the Saferworld contacts database is up-to-dateAssisting website developmentCarrying out other advocacy and communications activities to support Saferworld’sstrategic objectivesManaging and developing Saferworld’s image libraryMonitoring media to keep organisation up to date with current affairsPERSON SPECIFICATIONDegree in politics/international relations/development/communication/ media studiesor other relevant fieldGood interpersonal and communication skillsThe ability to research and write accurately for variety of audiences.Knowledge and understanding of the role of advocacy and communications work intaking forward Saferworld's agendaInitiative and a high degree of self-motivationHigh degree of literacy and good computer skillsA positive problem-solving approachAbility to work well within a teamA commitment to working in a non-partisan manner and to increasing constructivepublic debate while maintaining sound political judgement in the implementation of allworkTERMS AND CONDITIONSPayment:Length of internship:Hours:Holidays£8.30/hour (London living wage)a minimum of 6-12 months37.5 hours week28 days a year (January-December)This is a London based role so please confirm in your covering letter that you are eligible towork in the UK.APPLICATION PROCESS:To apply please send full CV together with covering letter letter outlining, relevantexperience and stating where you saw the advert to: Marie Aziz atrecruitment@saferworld.org.uk.
