When the user wantsto retrieve annotations or wants to ask a question, a requestis transmitted to the active documents add-on of theserver-side ADIME core. The request is processed by the activedocuments component, and subsequently, the relatedresponse is sent back to the ADIME client and presented tothe user.9.6 ConclusionMost state-of-the-art e-Learning systems in medical educationare rather static information management systemsthat include hardly any knowledge management features.ADIME, a proposed system for active documents in medicaleducation, attempts to solve these shortcomings of conventionalsystems by introducing functions known fromactive documents.With ADIME, users can be provided with a powerful toolthat lets them find answers to content-related questionsand allows them to retrieve annotations. This makes existinge-learning systems more active, facilitates knowledgetransfer, and enables knowledge management.Since the described architecture is an add-on to existingsystems, it is flexible and can be implemented in a numberof ways including standalone application programs andintegrated web-based software components.
