<strong>Ignitors</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>power</strong> <strong>switches</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>HID</strong>Product in<strong>for</strong>mation<strong>Ignitors</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>power</strong> <strong>switches</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>HID</strong><strong>Ignitors</strong> <strong>for</strong> generating the ignition voltages needed bymetal halide lamps <strong>and</strong> sodium lamps without internalstarters use either superimposed-pulse or pulse technology.The innovative range of ignitors from <strong>Tridonic</strong>includes st<strong>and</strong>ard ignitors suitable <strong>for</strong> all commerciallyavailable high-intensity discharge lamps with wattagesfrom 35 to 3,500 W, which require an ignition voltagebetween 800 <strong>and</strong> 5,000 V depending on the typeof lamp.The special feature of superimposed-pulse ignitorsis that the ignition voltage is generated without placinga high-voltage load on the choke. Superimposedpulsetechnology leads to a reproducible ignitionresponse which does not depend on the control gearused <strong>and</strong> is unaffected by voltage fluctuations.Pulse ignitors are operated with chokes tailoredspecifically <strong>for</strong> them. Integrated shutdown of defectivelamps reduces the load on the chokes to a minimum.Restart attempts in pulse-pause mode reducethe load on the chokes still further.<strong>Tridonic</strong> ignitors ensure lamps start reliably evenif the mains voltage is as low as 198 V (switch-onvoltage). The ignitor is switched-off as soon asthe lamp starts to prevent damage to the lamp.Because of the high-quality narrow-tolerancecomponents the switch-off voltage reachesthe high value of 185 V.The increase in temperature in the ignitor determinesits area of application <strong>and</strong> is there<strong>for</strong>e an importantcriterion. <strong>Tridonic</strong> ignitors are characterised by minimalself-heating, which in turn gives luminaire designersextra creative freedom.Superimposed-pulse ignitorsIn ignitors that operate on the superimposed principlethe ignition voltage is generated by an integrated pulsetrans<strong>for</strong>mer.This trans<strong>for</strong>ms the mains voltageto the ignition voltage of up to 5 kVrequired by the lamp.A cleverly designed circuit is usedto control the ignition process.This means that superimposedpulseignitors from <strong>Tridonic</strong> havehigh system reliability <strong>and</strong> reproducibilityof the ignition pulses,which are largely unaffected byfluctuations in the mains voltage.<strong>Ignitors</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>power</strong><strong>switches</strong>Catalogue 2012/2013www.tridonic.com 9

The ignitor uses aseparate tap on the choke, specially developed<strong>for</strong> pulse technology <strong>and</strong> designed <strong>for</strong> high ignitionvoltages.As the high-voltage pulse is generatedin the choke <strong>for</strong> the ignitionprocess it is possible to achievevery high ignition energy.The digital ZRM <strong>power</strong>PULSEfrom <strong>Tridonic</strong> compensates <strong>for</strong>the dependence of the outputvoltage on the mains voltageby using a microprocessor in theignitor to control the productionof the ignition pulse. This ensuresthat the choke <strong>and</strong> luminairewiring are not overloaded if thereis a mains overvoltage.
