For waste that is to be picked by the municipal authorities, these should beplaced in closed dumpsters prior to removal.3.6.5. Solid waste, including dressings <strong>and</strong> other items contaminated with blood <strong>and</strong>organic material, should be disposed of in leak-proof washable containersconveniently located in the OT/procedure house.3.6.6. Liquid waste should be poured down a utility drain or into a toilet or latrinewith a flush; or else it should be buried. Avoid splashing when disposing ofliquid waste.3.6.7. Sharp objects (hypodermic needles, scalpel blades, suture needles) should bedisposed of in a puncture-resistant container with a lid made of either metalor heavy rigid plastic or cardboard.3.6.8. Containers with needles <strong>and</strong> sharp objects should be disposed of by burningor burying on site.Summary of Waste Disposal <strong>and</strong> Decontamination ProceduresStep IWhile still wearing gloves <strong>and</strong> apron, dispose of contaminated waste items (gauze, cotton, etc.) by placing thesein a leak-proof container (e.g. a plastic bag). Put sharp objects into a plastic bucket containing 0.5% chlorinesolution <strong>and</strong> other metal instruments into a second plastic bucket.Step IIMake sure that all objects are completely immersed. Soak <strong>for</strong> 10 minutes in plastic buckets containing 0.5%chlorine solution.Step IIIRemove the used sheet from the operating table <strong>and</strong> decontaminate by soaking it <strong>for</strong> 10 minutes in 0.5%chlorine solution.Step IVDecontaminate all operating room surfaces that have come into contact with the patient (such as the table)between procedures by wiping them with 0.5% chlorine solution followed by scrubbing <strong>and</strong> mopping.Step VBe<strong>for</strong>e removing gloves, immerse gloved h<strong>and</strong>s in a bucket containing 0.5% chlorine solution to cleanbloodstains. Remove gloves carefully by turning them inside out <strong>and</strong> discard disposable gloves in a wastecontainer, or place reusable gloves in 0.5% chlorine solution <strong>and</strong> soak <strong>for</strong> 10 minutes.
