<strong>St<strong>and</strong>ards</strong> <strong>for</strong> female <strong>and</strong> male <strong>Sterilization</strong> services 33b)<strong>Sterilization</strong> by Chemical MethodDecontaminated, cleaned, <strong>and</strong> dried items are put in 2% glutaraldehyde solution <strong>for</strong>at least 8 to 10 hours.Items such as scissors <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong>ceps should be put into the solution in an openposition.Do not add or remove any items once the timer starts.Items should be rinsed well with sterile water (not boiled water), air-dried, <strong>and</strong> storedin a covered sterile container <strong>for</strong> up to 7 days. Sterile water can be prepared byautoclaving water <strong>for</strong> 20 minutes at 15 lb/sq inch in an autoclave.This method is most suitable <strong>for</strong> endoscopes <strong>and</strong> plastic cannulae.3.5.5. Processing LaparoscopesLaparoscopes <strong>and</strong> accessories should be sterilized or should undergo HLD using the chemicalmethod by soaking in 2% glutaraldehyde solution. All steps of the decontamination <strong>and</strong>cleaning process must be followed be<strong>for</strong>e the laparoscopes <strong>and</strong> accessories are put in thechemical solution.a)b)c)d)Decontamination: Immediately after use, gently wipe the laparoscope, fibreopticlight source, <strong>and</strong> cable <strong>and</strong> plastic tubing with luer lock using a cloth soakedin 60–90% ethyl or isopropyl alcohol to remove all blood <strong>and</strong> organic material.Cleaning: Place the dissembled parts of the laparoscope in a basin of cleanwater. Wash all outer surfaces using a soft cloth. Clean the inner channels with aclean brush supplied with the laparoscopic kit.High-level disinfection: Put clean <strong>and</strong> dried dissembled equipment in a basincontaining 2% glutaraldehyde solution <strong>for</strong> 20 minutes. For the disinfection to beeffective, all parts of the laparoscope must be fully immersed <strong>and</strong> the disinfectantmust touch all the surfaces of the instrument. Rinse twice with HLD water (waterboiled <strong>for</strong> 20 minutes <strong>and</strong> cooled) to remove all traces of the disinfectant.<strong>Sterilization</strong>: To sterilize, soak the clean <strong>and</strong> dried dissembled laparoscope in 2%glutaraldehyde solution <strong>for</strong> 8 to 10 hours. Rinse twice with sterile water to completelyremove all traces of the disinfectant <strong>and</strong> store in a sterile covered container.
