There<strong>for</strong>e, used needles should notbe bent, broken, recapped, or removed from the syringe be<strong>for</strong>e disposal. Instead,the assembled needle <strong>and</strong> syringe should be discarded in a puncture-resistantcontainer. If recapping is absolutely necessary, the cap should be held with aclamp while lacing it back over the needle or a one-h<strong>and</strong>ed technique should beused (while holding the syringe in one h<strong>and</strong>, scoop the cap off the flat surfacewith the needle, <strong>and</strong> then secure the cap on the needle with the other h<strong>and</strong>).Immediately after use, sharp objects (such as needles, scalpel blades, sutureneedles, glass ampoules, etc.) should be disposed of in a puncture-resistantcontainer with a lid made of either metal or heavy rigid plastic or cardboard. Thecontainer should be sealed <strong>and</strong> disposed of once three-fourths is filled, either byburying or incinerating.3.4. Maintenance of Asepsis in OT3.4.1. Be<strong>for</strong>e SurgeryClean the floor with a mop soaked in 0.5% chlorine solution.Clean the table/counter top with a cloth soaked in 0.5% chlorine solution3.4.2. After SurgeryDecontaminate all operating room surfaces that come into contact with the patient (suchas table) between procedures by scrubbing <strong>and</strong> wiping them with 0.5% chlorine solution.The operating table, counters/table tops, <strong>and</strong> light h<strong>and</strong>les should be wiped with adetergent <strong>and</strong> 0.5% chlorine solution.3.4.3. When Not in UseThe OT should be locked when not in use.Weekly cleaning: Scrub the room with the recommended disinfectant. Washing shouldbe per<strong>for</strong>med from top to bottom.3.4.4. Movement In <strong>and</strong> Around the OTThe entry of people <strong>and</strong> their movement inside the OT should be minimal as theintroduction of a number of micro-organisms is related directly to the number ofpeople <strong>and</strong> their movement.
