28<strong>St<strong>and</strong>ards</strong> <strong>for</strong> female <strong>and</strong> male <strong>Sterilization</strong> servicesb)c)procedure should be repeated several times so that the scrub lasts <strong>for</strong> 3 to 5minutes. The h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong>earms should be dried with a sterile towel only.When plain soap is used, it is best to rinse the h<strong>and</strong>s with alcohol or rub 3 to 5 mlof an alcohol–glycerine mixture (2 ml glycerine in 100 ml alcohol) on the h<strong>and</strong>suntil dry.A small stick or brush should be used <strong>for</strong> cleaning fingernails.Ideally, the surgeon <strong>and</strong> the assistant should scrub thoroughly between each procedure. Inhigh caseload settings, in order to prevent re-colonization of the skin by micro-organisms, thesurgical staff should do a three-minute surgical scrub every hour or after every five cases(whichever is earliest), or if the surgeon (<strong>and</strong>/or the surgical stuff) goes out of the OT, ortouches any infected item, or if the glove is torn. An alcohol scrub should be done afterevery procedure.3.2. Self-protection of Health Care Providers1.2.3.4.5.6.All doctors, nurses, <strong>and</strong> other health providers must wear proper gloves during allprocedures involving contact with any patients <strong>and</strong> biological fluids.Cleaners <strong>and</strong> other staff working in sluice rooms <strong>and</strong> laundries should wearprotective heavy-duty gloves <strong>and</strong> gumboots while cleaning <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>ling othersoiled materials <strong>and</strong> linen.The staff should wear utility gloves when h<strong>and</strong>ling <strong>and</strong> transporting waste, <strong>and</strong>should wash the gloves as well as their h<strong>and</strong>s when finished.For female sterilizations, all medical personnel working in the OT must changetheir shoes, wear theatre gowns/short-sleeved shirts, pyjamas, caps, masks, <strong>and</strong>surgical gloves.For vasectomy procedures that are not done in the OT, all medical personnelmust at least wear caps, masks, <strong>and</strong> surgical gloves.Operating surgeons should have short <strong>and</strong> clean fingernails <strong>and</strong> should removeall jewellery. The surgical mask should cover the bridge of the nose at all times.3.3. Safe Work Practicesa)b)Safe h<strong>and</strong>ling of sharp instruments during the operation requires using the ‘notouch technique’ by placing them on a small kidney tray.Accidental needle-stick injuries occur mostly during the removal of the needle
