<strong>St<strong>and</strong>ards</strong> <strong>for</strong> female <strong>and</strong> male <strong>Sterilization</strong> services 23f)g)h)i)Ligature of vas: The cut ends of the vas should be tied with non-absorbablesuture material (2 ‘0 ‘ black silk), <strong>and</strong> the sheath of the vas should preferably beinterposed between the two cut ends.Delivery of the opposite vas: The opposite vas must be fixed exactly in thesame manner using the three-finger technique at the lower end of the previouslymade puncture hole. It should be punctured <strong>and</strong> delivered in the same waythrough the earlier hole without increasing its size.Skin wounds: After the excision <strong>and</strong> ligature of both the vas, inspect the puncturesite <strong>for</strong> any bleeding. If there is none, the puncture site should be dressed with asmall piece of gauze. This should be retained <strong>for</strong> 48 hours. No stitch is appliedsince the puncture contracts <strong>and</strong> is nearly invisible after the removal of theinstruments.Scrotal support: The client should wear his normal snugly fitting underwear, oruse scrotal support with suspensory b<strong>and</strong>age.2.5. Post-operative Carea)b)c)The client should be discharged when the following conditions are met:i)ii)iii)iv)Thirty minutes have passed after the surgery.The client is alert <strong>and</strong> ambulatory.The client’s vital signs are stable <strong>and</strong> normal.The client has been seen <strong>and</strong> evaluated by a doctor.Analgesic <strong>and</strong> other medicines if needed must be provided/prescribed prior tosending the client home.Following vasectomy, the client should wear tight underpants or a loincloth tokeep the scrotum from moving <strong>and</strong> the subsequent possibility of bleeding <strong>and</strong>haematoma <strong>for</strong>mation.2.5.1. Post-operative InstructionsThe client should be provided with a discharge card indicating the name of the institution, thedate <strong>and</strong> type of surgery, <strong>and</strong> the date <strong>and</strong> place of follow-up (Annexure 8). Both verbal <strong>and</strong>written post-operative instructions should be given in the local language.The client should be told to do the following after he is discharged:a)Return home <strong>and</strong> take adequate rest.
