Indian Journal of Pharmacy PracticeAssociation of Pharmaceutical Teachers of IndiaHealth Screening Services: An OverviewMahendra Kumar BJ *, Sushil L, Ganachari MSDepartment of Pharmacy Practice, KLES College of Pharmacy, Belgaum, IndiaA B S T R A C TSubmitted: 22/07/2010Accepted: 03/09/2010INTRODUCTIONWorld health organization (WHO) defines health as a state ofcomplete physical, mental and social well-being and notmerely the absence of disease or infirmity. Over the years,WHO has taken forward the debate and has revised itsdefinition of health as “health is the extent to which anindividual or group is able.on one hand, to realize aspirationsand satisfy needs and on the other hand to change or cope withthe environment. Health is therefore, seen as a resource foreveryday life, not an object of living. It is a positive conceptemphasizing social and personal resources as well as physicalcapacities. There is no single definition that unifies theperceptions about health. Our understanding of it depends onthe many different contexts in which life is lived and health isperceived. Health is a human right and access to health careincluding essential medicines is derived right. Health isessential for sustainable economic and social development.Health is thus a very precious resource. Everyday, individualsexposed to various toxic substances over a period of timeresult in chronic diseases. The individual's health deterioratesby aging process, which sometimes is symptomatic orasymptomatic. Exacerbation of the disease leads tocomplications, which can be reversible or irreversible attimes. So health screening will help to detect early healthstatus of individual. The health deteriorates over a period oftime sometimes, which cannot show sign and symptoms.Screening refers to examination of a group of usuallyasymptomatic individuals to detect those with a highprobability of having a given disease, typically by means of aninexpensive diagnostic test. These screening tests are used todetect a disease when there is little or no evidence that anindividual has a suspected disease. In some cases, screeningmay be confused with monitoring; however, monitoringrefers to the act of observation and in some cases intervention-Address for Correspondence:B.J. Mahendra Kumar, Department of Pharmacy Practice, KLES College of Pharmacy,Belgaum, IndiaE-mail: bjmahendra2003@yahoo.co.ingenerally referring to monitoring of a condition afterdiagnosis to assess and improve outcomes.Services refer to help or assistance by health professionals forpeople at risk, who will get benefited on his/her health status. At many situations these services will not be provided. Healthcare professionals that include physician, pharmacist, nurses, physiotherapist, dentist, health educators etc can providehealth-screening services. The prerequisite for providinghealth care services is that he/she should be qualified enoughand trained adequately before implementation of healthscreenings.Health screening services are the services provided by thehealth care professionals to screen the health status ofindividuals with or without positive sign and symptoms.Health screening plays an important role in detecting traces ofillness in its early stages. It is suitable for everyone and notjust for high-risk individuals or top executives. Earlydetection can make a difference between relatively simplecourses of treatment or life-threatening complicationsrequiring lengthy and expensive hospital stays. Earlydiagnosis has always a better chance for cure. The screeningtests are used to try to detect a disease when there is little or noevidence that a person has a suspected disease. For example, measuring blood pressure helps to identify one of the risks ofheart disease. These screening tests are performed on peoplewho may show no symptoms of heart disease, as a tool todetect a potentially harmful and evolving condition. Theassessments can help to identify early signs of a disease and toprovide you with an evaluation of your overall current state ofhealth. Health screening services can be provided at hospital, clinical and community pharmacies or any other suitablesetting (hospital, community pharmacy) by healthprofessionals or trained technicians, which fulfill theminimum requirements.Benefits of health screeningAs you reach certain age groups, it is important to rememberfor health screening check up in order to maintain youroptimum health. Mahendra K BJ - Health screening services: An Overviewdetection of conditions such as hypertension or elevatedblood sugar and can help prevent serious diseases likediabetes and heart disease that kill thousands of people everyyear. The benefits of ongoing health screening servicesrevolve around prevention and early detection. It is importantfor health issues such as diabetes, cholesterol, lung functionor other health related conditions, which could adverselyaffect our lives. Many cases of disease exist and remainundiagnosed that seriously affect our quality of life. Many ofthese conditions can be corrected or improved through asimple course of treatment if once it has been discovered byhealth screening. The aim of health screening is that theprevention is better than cure. Health screening is viewed asan ongoing health management's process but not as a medicalexamination. The majority of people screened require nofurther advice or treatment. So, one of the additional benefitsof a health screen is peace of mind and reassurance.According to US government reports, regular screening canreduce deaths from colorectal cancer by 30%, cervical cancerby up to 90%, and breast cancer by 15-30% among womenover age 40, as well as identifying controllable risk factors forpreventable diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. The prevalence and incidence of diabetes and cardiac diseasesare increasing drastically over past years. Largest number ofdiabetic subjects of the world is in India and being termed asdiabetes capital of the world. This number is expected to rise13to 69.9 million by 2025.Around the world, people were suffering from chronicdiseases specifically diabetes and hypertension who remainundiagnosed. In some poorer countries, 80% to 90% of peoplewith diabetes are undiagnosed; while even in high-income14countries 30% may be undiagnosed.People often have chronic diseases for a long time before it isdiagnosed. For many people, the diagnosis comes when theymake contact with the health system for other reasons forexample when admitted or visited to hospital with minorillness or injuries. The longer, people are undiagnosed, themore likely it is the complication of the disease. HealthScreening Services contributes to economic burden of thepatient by early diagnosis and prevention.Advantages of health screeningHealth screenings are convenient (readily available),affordable (inexpensive), comprehensive, very reliable withfew false negatives and flexible. A suitable place for counseling patients isessential and some primary care groups for providing fundingfor building counseling areas in pharmacies. It is vital that the results of appropriate health screening testare recorded in patients computerized medication records. The results of all the diagnostic tests carried out in pharmaciescould be entered on a 'smartcard' that is retained by the patientfor future reference. Such a system would put patients incontrol of their own records. Alternatively or as well asauthorized health care professionals who are caring for thatpatient could transmit the results via an Internet or some othersuitable means to some secure site of central patients' recordsthat is only assessable.
