86 <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> of PennsylvaniaRehabilitative Sciences/Special EducationLevel I certification in special education or its equivalentand the requisite years of creditable teaching experience,successful completion of the master’s program can leadto Pennsylvania Instructional Level II certification. Note:It is the responsibility of the student holding a specialeducation certificate from another state to ensure thecertificate is equivalent to the Pennsylvania InstructionalLevel I certificate.For students not already certified in special educationbut holding a bachelor’s degree from an accreditedprogram and wishing to become certified in specialeducation while continuing their graduate studies, anindividual course of study leading to both certificationand the graduate degree is developed by the student’sadvisor with consideration for the student’s backgroundof education and experience in conjunction with state andprogram requirements.All courses in the graduate program are approved forAct 48 continuing education credits.<strong>Graduate</strong> AssistantshipsThe Department of Special Education and RehabilitativeSciences regularly awards a number of graduateassistantships. Assistantships in special education andrehabilitative sciences serve a variety of purposes. <strong>Graduate</strong>assistants (GAs) assist the professors in developing coursematerials and resources; carrying out literature searches; andsupervising and assisting undergraduates in the computerlab. <strong>Graduate</strong> assistantships not only provide uniqueexperiences within the field, but also are an opportunityfor the student to pursue advanced training with financialsupport.Applicants for a graduate assistantship must havecompleted all program application requirements andhave been admitted in full standing to the program. Aseparate GA application must then be submitted to theDepartment of Special Education and RehabilitativeSciences. All applications for GAs should be submittedby the beginning of February to ensure consideration forthe following academic year.Note: <strong>Graduate</strong> students who are completing a studentteaching requirement as a part of state certification
