Risco (SRU),J. Sparlin (CU)The Master of Science in Nursing program issponsored jointly by <strong>Clarion</strong>, Edinboro, and SlipperyRock Universities. There are two concentration areasin this program: one leads to preparation as a familynurse practitioner (FNP) and the other to preparationas a nurse educator (NE). The FNP concentration (45semester hours) educates family nurse practitioners toprovide primary care in medically under-served areas inwestern Pennsylvania and prepares graduates to applyfor Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP)status to the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. TheNE concentration (36 semester hours) prepares nurseeducators to teach in undergraduate nursing programssuch as ASN and diploma programs. NE students learnto design, implement, and evaluate instruction.This program is accredited by the National League forNursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). <strong>Graduate</strong>sof the program will receive a joint degree granted by alluniversities and nurse practitioner graduates are eligibleto apply for legal certification in the Commonwealth ofPennsylvania. As of 2006, nurse practitioner graduatesmust pass a national certifying examination prior toobtaining legal certification in Pennsylvania.Courses are offered at <strong>Clarion</strong>, Edinboro, and SlipperyRock Universities, including sites in Edinboro, <strong>Clarion</strong>,Oil City, Pittsburgh, and Slippery Rock. Students mayselect one university site for advisement and may utilizefacilities and services of all three universities. Students should check theMSN Student Handbook (online) and the program Websitefor the most up-to-date program information.Program ObjectivesThe Master of Science in Nursing program affordsadvanced practice nurses the opportunity to develop asexpert clinicians or nurse educators, participate in shapinghealth policy, and contribute to research that improvespatient care or nursing education. The nursing programprovides the foundation for a life-long process of personaland professional growth as well as for doctoral education.Specifically designed for the working professional, allcourses are taught via interactive television and the WorldWide Web. Most students study on a part-time basis.Program Outcomes<strong>Graduate</strong>s will:l. Synthesize knowledge from nursing, thesciences, and humanities into advanced nursingpractice.2. Demonstrate critical thinking and diagnosticreasoning in decision-making activities.3. Use theoretical knowledge and researchfindings as a foundation for advanced nursingpractice.4. Incorporate professional/legal standards andmoral/ethical values into a culturally sensitivepractice.5. Apply nursing knowledge and related theoriesto nursing and health through nursing educationand advanced clinical practice.6. Build a professional system that includesinterdisciplinary communication, collaboration,and teamwork.7. Participate in legislative and policy-makingendeavors that influence health care servicesand practices.8. Contribute to nursing knowledge throughadvanced clinical practice and/or education andresearch.Admission RequirementsAdmission requirements include:• Payment of the $30 application fee• Evidence of an earned baccalaureate degree innursing from an NLNAC- or CCNE-accreditedprogram• Hold licensure as a registered nurse in the statewhere the student’s clinical experience will beprecepted• An undergraduate QPA of 2.75 on a 4.00 scaleor a graduate QPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale• One year of recent full-time clinical practice ortwo years of part-time clinical practice; submita resume describing professional experience• Interview with a member of the CU, EU, or SRUnursing facultyNursing
