<strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> of Pennsylvania 63Distance EducationAs part of its commitment to meeting the needs ofall residents of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,the Department of Library Science offers a variety ofdistance education programs. These programs utilizevarious delivery techniques, including on-site instruction,interactive television (ITV), and Web-based delivery. Thedepartment offers two online cohort programs that begineach January. See www.clarion.edu/libsci for the programscurrently being offered.Once admitted to graduate study at <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>,students may enroll in any of the distance educationcourses offered by the department. These courses maybe taken as part of a master’s or Certificate of AdvancedStudies program, or individually for continuing educationpurposes.The following distance education programs arecurrently available:• Dixon <strong>University</strong> Center, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania• Philadelphia area• Web-based courses<strong>Graduate</strong> Assistantships andScholarshipsThe Department of Library Science has availablea number of assistantships for both entering andcontinuing students. Continuing students may competefor several department scholarships. For more informationconcerning assistantships, refer to the general informationsection of this catalog. <strong>Graduate</strong> students are eligible forthe following department scholarships:• The Ahmad F. M. Gamaluddin Scholarship inLibrary Science• The Charles R. Flack Scholarship in LibraryScience• The Elizabeth A. Rupert <strong>Graduate</strong> Scholarshipin Library Science• The H. W. Wilson ScholarshipScholarship application deadlines are announced onthe department’s calendar. Applications for graduateassistantships are included in the packet of informationsent to all prospective students.Additional information on financial aid may be obtainedfrom the booklet, Financial Assistance for Library andInformation Studies, published by the American LibraryAssociation Committee on Education.AdvisementStudents are assigned a faculty advisor upon admissionto the program. Students must discuss course schedulingwith their advisor in order to register for classes eachsemester. At any time, a student may select a differentadvisor having greater expertise and experience in thestudent’s area of interest. In addition to assisting studentsin developing a program of study, faculty advisors workwith students to develop career objectives, prepareresumes, and plan a job search.InternshipLS 570, Internship in Librarianship, enables a studentto anticipate the librarian’s professional role and to gainrelated experience. The major purpose of this course is tofamiliarize the student with practical problems in the fieldby providing laboratory experience in the professionalatmosphere of a cooperating library or information center.For more information, see http://www.clarion.edu/libsci/.Resources and FacilitiesThe Department of Library Science is located onthe second floor of Carlson Library. The departmentoffices, classrooms, and laboratories accommodate avariety of activities for students and faculty within acompact area. The library science classroom featuresITV equipment and networked computer display units.Students have ready access to a variety of informationservices, both on-line and on CD-ROM, and to standardmicrocomputer applications in the department’s ComputerLaboratory. Also housed here are cataloguing tools andother print resources. A separate Media ProductionLaboratory supports the creation and editing of multimediapresentations. All students receive e-mail accounts andaccess to the Internet.Center for the Study of Rural LibrarianshipLibrary Science
