Thestudent is responsible for filing an officialgraduate transcript of any work presented fortransfer credit with the chair of the Departmentof Library Science.• <strong>Graduate</strong> credit in related disciplines may betransferred upon prior approval by advisor andchair.• Students who have had library experienceduplicating the subject matter covered inrequired courses may be permitted to take aqualifying examination to determine whether heor she might waive the course(s) and substituteelective courses. Qualifying examinations maybe waived at the chair’s discretion.Degree RequirementsThe degree of Master of Science in Library Science isconferred upon the candidate who has met the followingrequirements:• The completion of 36 hours of approvedgraduate study, including five required corecourses (LS 500, 501, 502, 504, and 550), onemanagement course (LS 530, 531, 532, 533, or569), and six elective courses.• The maintenance of a cumulative average of3.00 or higher. A student who receives a gradeof “C” or lower in two or more courses isdisqualified as a candidate in the degree programunless special permission to continue is obtainedfrom the dean of the College of Education andHuman Services and the coordinator of <strong>Graduate</strong>Studies.• The completion of all degree requirementswithin a six-year period. Course work oversix years old may not be applied toward thedegree.Master of Science in LibraryScience with Pennsylvania LibraryScience K-12 CertificationA student wishing to obtain Pennsylvania LibraryScience Certification, K-12, must hold a valid teachingcertificate (or meet the requirements for preliminarycertification by taking required undergraduate courses);complete 36 semester hours of an approved curriculumin library science. Students without prior certificationwill take twelve semester hours of student teaching;students with emergency Pennsylvania Library ScienceCertification may petition the department to substitute aportfolio for the internship requirement.Required courses for the Master of Science in LibraryScience degree with Pennsylvania Library ScienceCertification, K-12, include: LS 459g, 500, 501, 502,504, 532, 550, 555/577, 570, 583, 589, and two electivecourses.Master of Science in Library Science/Juris Doctor ProgramThe department offers a joint M.S.L.S./J.D. programin cooperation with Widener <strong>University</strong> School of Law’sHarrisburg, Pennsylvania, campus. Students must beadmitted to both programs separately. Any six credits ofcoursework taken as part of a student’s J.D. program maybe applied to that student’s M.S.L.S. program, and viceversa. These courses will be chosen in consultation withthe student’s faculty advisors.Continuing EducationCertificate of Advanced StudiesThe Certificate of Advanced Studies programis designed to provide the post-master’s student anopportunity to expand and update professional skills andcompetencies through a structured pattern of continuingeducation. Study may be either full- or part-time. On afull-time basis, the certificate may be completed in twosemesters. Requirements include a written statement ofpersonal/professional goals, completion of a programof 24 graduate credits within a four-year period, andmaintenance of a 3.00 QPA.Documentation required for admission includes agoals statement, an official transcript from the schoolthat granted the master’s degree in library science,completed university application for admission formand recommendation forms, and the $30 applicationfee. Further information is available from the <strong>Graduate</strong>Studies office.Non-Degree StatusIndividuals not interested in a formal degree orcertificate program may enroll in courses as a nondegreestudent; however, no more than six credits ofwork completed as a non-degree student may later betransferred to a degree or certificate program. Studentsmust have a baccalaureate degree from a regionallyaccredited institution, submit a completed applicationform and official transcripts, and pay the $30 applicationfee.
