Professional DevelopmentProvide opportunities for lifelong learning<strong>Graduate</strong> Program ObjectivesThe graduate program in library science providesprofessional study encompassing principles and techniquescommon to all types of libraries and information centerswith the opportunity for advanced work in areas of specialinterest. The curriculum reflects today’s applicationsof information technology in libraries and informationcenters.The master’s program at <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> wasinitiated in 1967 and has the distinction of being thefirst graduate library science program offered withinthe State System of Higher Education. The program hasbeen accredited by the American Library Associationsince 1976.M.S.L.S. Admission RequirementsEligibilityApplicants for admission to the Master of Sciencein Library Science degree program must meet Divisionof <strong>Graduate</strong> Studies admission requirements with thefollowing additions:M.S.L.S.1. an overall QPA for the baccalaureate degree ofat least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale; or2. a 3.00 QPA for the last 60 credits of thebaccalaureate degree with an overall qualitypointaverage of at least 2.75; or3. a 2.75 to 2.99 overall QPA for the baccalaureatedegree with a score of at least 50 on the MillerAnalogies Test or a combined score of at least1,000 on the quantitative and verbal sections ofthe <strong>Graduate</strong> Record Examination; or4. a graduate degree in another discipline with anoverall QPA of at least 3.00 and an overallundergraduate QPA of at least 2.75.International students are required to achieve aminimum score of 550 on the TOEFL.M.S.L.S. with Pennsylvania Library ScienceCertificationIn addition to the above, students earning their initialM.S.L.S. certification with Pennsylvania Library ScienceCertification program in Spring 2002 or later must meetthe following additional requirements:1. completion of at least six credits of college-levelmathematics; and2. completion of at least six credits of college-levelEnglish composition and literature.Applicants without valid teacher certification mustalso pass the Praxis I pre-professional skills tests. Statelaw limits the number of applicants with an overallquality-point average for the baccalaureate degree ofless than 3.00 on a 4.00 scale who can be admitted tothe School Library Media Certification program.ProcedureStudents may begin their studies during the fall orspring semesters or during any summer session. Allstudents must enroll in LS 504, Introduction to theInformation Professions, as close as possible to the startof their program as the department’s course schedulepermits. For most students this will be in their first termof study.Transfer of Credits/Waiver of CoursesA maximum of six graduate semester hours may betransferred and/or waived in any of the following ways:• Acceptable graduate credits in library sciencecompleted at <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> as a nondegreestudent or at another institution with anLibrary Science
