Additionally, students arerequired to complete a written comprehensive examrepresenting the following core competencies: research,pedagogy, and curriculum. In addition, in relation to thecore competencies, content from the student’s area ofspecialization will be incorporated within these areas.Mathematics concentration requires a MathematicalPortfolio.Reading SpecialistCertificationSatisfactory completion of the M.Ed. with readingconcentration meets the requirements for readingspecialist certification. For those people who are withoutcareer placement, the faculty and the university CareerServices can provide assistance in seeking appropriateemployment. Students should register with CareerServices before graduation.<strong>Graduate</strong> AssistantshipsA limited number of graduate assistantships aregranted for 8.5 and/or 17 hours of departmental serviceper week in exchange for a waiver of tuition and a stipend.Applications are available in the <strong>Graduate</strong> Studies officeand should be submitted with the application for admissionto graduate study.AdvisementUpon acceptance into the graduate program, studentswill be assigned a department advisor who is qualified toassist the student in his or her specific career goals. Theresponsibility for meeting all stated requirements for themaster’s degree, however, is with the student.Instructional TechnologySpecialist Certificate ProgramCertified Instructional Technology Specialists (ITS)help educational institutions apply technology to improveteaching and learning. The ITS program emphasizes theuse of instructional technology as it relates to specificlearning outcomes. <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s program alsoaddresses the dynamics of rural communities andthe changing diversity of our urban areas through amultimedia approach.<strong>Graduate</strong>s of the ITS certificate program will be able to:• develop instructional materials;• determine appropriate uses of instructionaltechnology in learning;• evaluate materials and technologies;• develop effective multimedia instructionalmaterials;• develop regulation-compliant media utilizationplans;• identify strategies to increase the use ofinstructional technology in underservedcommunities including specific plans to reachculturally diverse and special needs; and• utilize human resource management skills.
