<strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> of Pennsylvania 21A limited number of graduate assistantships and/or research assistantships are available. Departmentalgraduate assistants are assigned to assist in laboratorysupervision in the undergraduate program in biology.Research assistants generally work on a grant-fundedproject directed by a faculty member. <strong>Graduate</strong> assistantsmust have full-admission status.All applicants for graduate assistantships must firstcomplete the regular admission procedure and submit theapplication for a graduate assistantship to the Departmentof Biology. Applicants for graduate assistantships mustrequest their referees include in their three letters ofrecommendation a statement concerning the student’spotential as a laboratory assistant.All new applicants for graduate assistantships will berequired to complete an interview before appointment.<strong>Graduate</strong> assistantships are usually renewable for twoyears if the student has made reasonable progress towardthe degree (see below).New applicants for graduate assistantships mustsubmit completed applications no later than April15; appointments are usually made by May 1 of eachyear. Continuing students must submit an assistantshipapplication packet by April 1.AdvisementBefore course work begins, the admitted studentshould meet with the graduate program coordinator orassigned major advisor for orientation and assistance inplanning the first semester program. The student shouldinitiate the selection of a major advisor and a graduatecommittee during the first semester at <strong>Clarion</strong>. The studentand the graduate committee shall develop an academicresearch program leading to the M.S. degree. The studentwill be responsible for scheduling a <strong>Graduate</strong> Committeemeeting once per semester to evaluate progress towardthe completion of the program. Minutes of the graduatemeetings will be recorded by the major advisor and willbecome a part of the student’s permanent file.A minimum of nine credits per semester is considereda full load for graduate students. Twelve semester hours(three credits per session) is a maximum load duringsummer sessions. Exceptions may be authorized by thedean of <strong>Graduate</strong> Studies upon recommendation by theDepartment of Biology acting upon a written petition bythe student.It is the candidate’s responsibility to file, with the aidof his or her major advisor, an Application for Graduationbefore the published deadline during the semester in whichhe or she intends to graduate.CoursesBiology
