16 <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> of Pennsylvania<strong>Graduate</strong> Study at<strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>The services of the health center are similar to thoseprovided in a physician’s office. Specific services include:physical examinations, immunizations, allergy injections,medication and prescriptions, pregnancy testing, treatmentof acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, and referralto appropriate community resources. Proper immunizationis highly recommended prior to university entrance.Pennsylvania Senate Bill 955, passed into law on June28, 2002, mandates that all university students livingin residence halls be immunized against meningitis orsign an informed declination statement. The AmericanCollege Health Association also supports the meningitisvaccine.A health services fee assessed at the beginning of eachsemester includes an unlimited number of visits to thehealth center. There may be additional charges for anymedications or procedures associated with the visit.Students are strongly encouraged to contact their primaryinsurance carrier to determine the conditions and limitations,if any, on medical treatment away from home.Health InsuranceThe health center fee includes basic provider serviceswithin the Keeling Health Center. Charges for laboratory,X-ray, outpatient or inpatient services at other facilities,and medications are not covered, and are the responsibilityof the individual student. Health insurance coverage isstrongly encouraged prior to enrollment at <strong>Clarion</strong><strong>University</strong>.In an attempt to offer students an affordable healthinsurance option, <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> has collaboratedwith nine other universities in the Pennsylvania StateSystem of Higher Education to offer an economical andcomprehensive insurance policy to those students notcovered by a parent policy. Consolidated Health Plans(www.consolidatedhealthplan.com) has been selected asthe insurance provider, and students may choose from avariety of options.Parents who plan to continue a son or daughter onfamily insurance plans should contact their insuranceprovider to determine the effects of university entranceupon dependent coverage. This is particularly importantunder managed care plans.<strong>University</strong> policy requires that students have medicalinsurance coverage to be eligible for participation inuniversity-sanctioned, sponsored and/or approved activities,including intercollegiate sports. The assumption is thatstudents participating in such activities are covered bymedical insurance, and proof of coverage can be producedupon the university’s request.Students interested in obtaining insurance fromConsolidated Health Plans should contact the Directorof Health Services at 814-393-2121.International Students–Medical InsuranceCoverageMedical insurance is required of all internationalstudents enrolled at <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Students who donot show proof of health insurance coverage comparableto <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s group plan will be required toenroll in the university’s plan, and be responsible forpayment. Students will not be allowed to complete courseregistration until all medical insurance requirements aremet. The current cost of the group insurance plan is $850/year, full payment of which is required at the beginning ofthe academic year. Please understand that the medicalinsurance premium is not included in the statement ofaccount issued by the university for tuition, fees, and roomand board. A separate payment of cash or money order isrequired. Details of payment will be explained at the timeof application for insurance.If an international student has coverage through his orher sponsor or through another agency in his or her homecountry that provides adequate coverage during the student’sstay in the United States as a student, the internationalstudent may request to be exempt from subscribing to thegroup plan offered through <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Coveragemust include:*minimum medical expense benefit of $50,000*minimum repatriation expense benefit of $7,500*minimum medical evacuation benefit of $10,000Students requesting exemption from the group planare required to submit details of insurance coverage to theOffice of International Programs upon arrival at <strong>Clarion</strong><strong>University</strong>. Details must be written in English and includethe following information: company name and address,phone and fax numbers; complete name of policy holderand identification number, if assigned; effective date ofcoverage and expiration date of coverage; and policybenefits (as described above).HousingLimited housing for graduate students is available in
