This is necessary for completionof the student’s permanent record. Students must declare their intentionsin writing to the Office of the Registrar before the end ofthe drop/add period. Laboratory courses may not be takenas an audit. Students who enroll in a course for credit maychange to an audit grade only during the drop/add period.Likewise, students who enroll in a course to audit mayonly change to credit during this same period.Courses taken as an audit will be recorded on theofficial transcript with a grade of “AU”; no credit or lettergrade will be received. <strong>Graduate</strong>-level courses taken as an“audit” cannot be counted as credits in a degree programIncomplete GradesThe “I” grade may be used when a student hascompleted the major portion of the requirements for agiven course, but for reasons beyond expected control,such as illness or family emergency, cannot completeall requirements. Normally, incomplete grades must beremoved by the end of the first semester subsequent to theawarding of the incomplete. Extensions may be granted ifthe instructor awarding the incomplete deems that moretime is necessary to fulfill course requirements. Researchand thesis incomplete grades normally continue beyondone semester.An incomplete that is not converted to a final gradeby the end of the semester following its issuance and isnot approved for extension by the instructor becomes afailing grade.No one may be cleared for graduation with “I” gradeson record.In Progress GradesThe grade “IP” is given for thesis work and/or coursesat the graduate level that might take more than a semesterfor completion. The grade “IP” is given only when thework in a course extends beyond the semester or termoriginally scheduled. It implies satisfactory performance.The grade “IP” will not alter the QPA of the student sincehours attempted, hours earned, and quality points earnedwill be entered in cumulative totals once the final gradeis submitted. The “IP” grade shall remain on the student’stranscript until the instructor submits a grade.AdvisementUpon admission to a graduate program, a student isassigned an advisor. The advisor will assist the studentin planning an individual program and in maintainingprogress within the program.Research, Theses, and ComprehensiveExaminationsThe individual graduate programs within the universityestablish research, theses, and/or comprehensiveexamination requirements. The student should refer tothe section of this catalog presenting specific programsto determine exact requirements.Student Responsibility for AcademicRequirementsProvisions in the <strong>Clarion</strong> graduate catalog cannot beconsidered an irrevocable contract between the universityand the student.The university makes every effort to keep informationin the catalog current. It must reserve the right, however,to amend any academic, administrative, or disciplinarypolicies or regulations and to update fees or servicecharges described in this catalog without prior notice to
