<strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong> of Pennsylvania 9to <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s approved academic credit. Thecredits must be capable of counting toward a graduatedegree at the sponsoring institution. Course credit willnot be transferred until the course has been evaluatedand approved. A student enrolled in a degree program at<strong>Clarion</strong> who wishes to take a course at another institutionfor transfer to <strong>Clarion</strong> should obtain prior approval fromhis/her academic advisor, department chair, and thecollege and graduate deans (see transfer credit form forapproval process). The student is required to furnish acomplete description of the intended transfer course(s)usually through a catalog description and the syllabusof the course(s) for which he/she is requesting transfercredit.Courses transferred must be certified as graduate levelon the official transcript and must have a grade of B orbetter. Transfer credit course grades are not computed inthe <strong>Clarion</strong> quality-point-average and all transfer creditswill be calculated in semester hours. The proposed transfercredit must not be more than six years old at the time ofcompletion of the degree program at <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>.Courses already credited toward an earned degree maynot be used for a second degree.The following types of courses are not accepted fortransfer credit: correspondence course credit, pass/failgrades, and workshop courses. <strong>Graduate</strong> Transfer CreditRequest forms are available in the <strong>Graduate</strong> Studiesoffice.ResidencySeventy percent of all credits required for completionof a graduate degree must be earned in course workoffered by <strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>. All graduate-degreeprograms require a minimum of 30 semester hours ofcredit. Individual programs may require more than 30semester hours.Timeliness of Enrollment andCompletion of DegreeIt is expected that an applicant admitted to graduatestudy will enroll for course work at once. Students whodo not enroll at <strong>Clarion</strong> for graduate courses in programsto which they are admitted within 12 months followingadmission may be required to reapply before they canenroll. Information about eligibility to enroll in classesmay be obtained from the <strong>Graduate</strong> Studies office.A degree must be completed within six years from thedate of initial enrollment. Extensions may be allowed onlyby approval of the department chair, dean of the collegein which the student’s program resides, and the dean of<strong>Graduate</strong> Studies.Full-Time StatusA graduate student enrolled in nine semester hours ofcourse work in a term is considered a full-time student.<strong>Graduate</strong> Credit LoadThe policy regarding credit load for graduate studentsis to limit students to a maximum of 12 graduate credithours per semester. Students who wish to enroll for morethan 12 graduate credit hours must have the approval ofthe graduate program coordinator, the college dean, anddean of graduate studies.400-Level CoursesNot all 400-level courses can be taken for graduatecredit. Students should consult with graduate programcoordinators or the <strong>Graduate</strong> Studies office to determine400-level courses that have been approved for graduatecredit. These approved 400-level courses are listedeach semester in the <strong>Graduate</strong> section of the publishedSchedule of Classes. Note: courses taken at the 400-levelfor undergraduate credit cannot be repeated for graduatecredit. The maximum number of 400-level coursesaccepted toward degree requirements varies among thegraduate programs. See specific program descriptionsand requirements.WithdrawalsAll class withdrawals must be made through theOffice of the Registrar, 122 Carrier AdministrationBuilding. Classes from which a student withdrawsduring the period of drop/add will not appear on thestudent’s record. Withdrawals between the end of thesecond and ninth weeks may be made without penalty.After the beginning of the 10 th week of a semester or thesecond half of a summer session, a course from which astudent withdraws shall be finally reported with a gradeof “E.” Exceptions may be made for withdrawals due toextenuating circumstances such as illness or some otherunavoidable occurrence.If a student is on probation at the time of withdrawalfrom all classes and the withdrawal is after the 12 th weekof the semester, the student will not be permitted to returnfor the following semester unless the withdrawal is basedon extenuating circumstances.If a withdrawal is not made through the Office of theRegistrar, a failing grade will be recorded for the affected<strong>Graduate</strong> Study at<strong>Clarion</strong> <strong>University</strong>
