Wined & Dined with Claire Smith from No.10 The Coffee HouseThere hasbeen muchmedia coveragerecently aboutthe therapeuticbenefits ofcooking andin particular, baking. Mary Berry was featuredin The Mail last week, the heading ofher article stating that “Baking helpedto heal my broken heart.” In it sherevealed that after her nineteen yearold son died in a car accident cookingwas the only way she knew how toregain some normality in her life.Novelist Marian Keyes, after sufferingfrom depression, has just launchedher latest book which is entitled“Saved by Cake” in which shepresents a similar argument –that baking helped her throughsome of the darkest hours.Baking it seems, is big news atthe moment.Whether it be baking a cake, grinding the spices for a gloriouslytasty main or simply stirring a bowlof rich, deep chocolate (which tome is like gazing into the depths ofanother world), cooking is the sameas painting a picture with coloursor words, It doesn’t matter howabstract or humble the end productis; the process of creation will satisfythe senses- help you to connect tosomething deep within. At the end of a particularly stressfulday last week I was making a batch oforange creams for next day’s dessert(they need to set overnight). TheTo advertise call us on 01535 6422276custard takes a long time to thickenand has to be stirred continuously untilit begins to do so. The warmth of thekitchen and the heady citrus aromaand the deeply frothing, honey-colouredsyrup were so soothing and comfortingthat as I stirred I felt the stress of theday just falling away.Anyone who has seen the film Julieand Julia, which documents the lives oftwo women from very different walksof life, will already be familiar with thisphilosophy. Julia Childs who is wealthy, and childless discovers a passion forfood, cooking, and writing about both, that provide her with the meaningand focus lacking in her privilegedlifestyle. Julie, though coming from anentirely different backgroundto Julia finds the same kindof fulfilment through her ownlove of food and cooking. Toquote her character when shearrives home after a very badday at work and decides to trylifting her spirits by making chocolatecream pie; “You know what I love aboutcooking, I love that after a day whennothing is sure, and when I say nothingI mean nothing; you can come homeand absolutely know that if you add eggyolks to chocolate, sugar and milk it willget thick. It’s such a comfort.”I tend to agree. Your kitchen holdsall the potential of becoming yoursanctuary. A place which enfolds youand in which you can immerse yourselfin the preparation of whatever it isthat will soothe away the troubles ofthe day; - even if that happens to benothing more than a cup of tea.Say you saw it in the Worth Valley Mag!7

If youget a phone call from someone advisingyou that Microsoft knows there is aproblem with your computer, and offeringto resolve the problem through a remotesupport connection, do not believe a wordthey say.To be crystal clear, these callers have noconnection to Microsoft whatsoever.Scammers want credit card details orother valuable personal data. Do not letthem have access to your computer!Once the caller has remote control theymay report that viruses or malware arepresent. Removal will resolve the ‘problem’,they’ll say. Utter Twaddle, indeed!A scammer cannot know there’s malwareon your computer before calling you, unlessit has been installed deliberately by them, ortheir collaborators, and data they’ve alreadystolen happened to include your phonenumber. In a few cases malware may presentas a result of the computer being used tovisit genuine websites, which have beencompromised, or after having been directedto a ‘spoof’ version of a genuine website, butin most cases there is no malware presentat all before the scammer calls.Once they have control of your computerthe scammer may ask for your paymentcard details in return for removing viruses/malware, or they may direct you to awebsite to ‘process your payment’, or theymay ‘plant’ malware which generates a popup message warning of viruses and directsyou to a website where you are promptedto enter payment card details in returnfor accessing a link to download spurioussoftware (if it exists at all).Whilst some malware is designed tolure you into divulging your payment carddetails, other examples are designed torun undetected, recording your keystrokesor transferring other valuable personaldata from your computer into the hands ofcriminals.Microsoft does not monitor the world’scomputers for software problems, virusesor malware. Nor does it make unsolicitedconnections between its systems and yourcomputer for any purpose.Windows may occasionally report that itis recovering from a problem. There are nopeople involved in this process, so allowingWindows to search for a solution won’ttrigger a call out of the blue from Microsoft! If you receive an unusual call, immediatelyask the caller for their name and phonenumber and tell them you’ll call themback. If they act suspicious by ‘makingtheir excuses’ and ending the call, you’llknow you’ve had a lucky escape. If they’repersistent (and many of them are!) tellthem that you know what they’re up to, thatyou’re ending the call and you are going toreport them to the Police. Then do exactlythat.OK, the Police may find it difficult totake action immediately, but if they aren’tmade aware of these scams they cannottake action. The more reports they get,the more chance they’ll have of gatheringevidence. Solar Power Still Pays!Solar panels on your roof are stilla wise investment, despite theGovernment’s recent unexpecteddecision to halve the attractiveFeed-In Tariff. To combat this, leadinginstallers Electroctect UK Ltd, whospecialise in solar photovoltaic installations, are massively reducing their prices inorder to still offer a 10 per cent return oninvestment, so the return will not be muchdifferent from before. Electrotect clientswill still get the same high standardof installation, and will gain the benefits of asystem that can cut electricity bills by up to£400 a year –well worth considering whenpower companies are projecting rises ofup to 60 percent by 2016.Clients will discover that microgenerationis a sensible means of earning money, cutting power bills and reducing theircarbon footprint, whether it’s on the familyhome or asmall business. The Government first introduced Feed-inTariffs, a Clean Energy Cash Back scheme,to provide an incentive for small scalepower generation. Under this scheme, energy suppliers make regular paymentstohouseholders who generate their ownelectricity from renewable sources, suchas solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. The scheme guarantees a minimumpayment for all electricity generated by thesystem, as well as a separate payment forthe electricity exported to the national grid. The payments are index linked, tax freeand guaranteed for 25 years and are inaddition to the savings made by using theonsite generated electricity. Daniel Lang, ofElectrotect, advises people on how to applyfor the FITs scheme and the expectedrate of financial return. “We believe weTo advertise call us on 01535 64222714have a responsibility to the environment tocut down CO2 emissions”, said Danny.“Despite the reduction in FITspayments, this scheme makes microgenerationaccessible to a far wider range of people.”Daniel added: “We use the latest, technology. Which is guaranteed for 25years – giving you plenty of time to not onlyrecoup your investment, but also makemoney and add value to your home.”The lightweight PV panels are fairlyunobtrusive and can be fitted to eitherroofs or walls, Daniel added: “Ourinstallation causes little disruption and, depending on the size of the job, can be upand running well within a week and allour systems are completely bespokedesigned around the site and clientsneeds.”Fortunately for us in the North, solar panels don’t require bright sunshineto generate power; they only needdaylight. And for when the sun goes down,Electrotect are now looking at installingcomplete off-grid systems so your solarpanels help charge a bank of batteriesthrough the day. Then in the eveningthe batteries run your home, completelyeliminating the need to pay an electricitysupplier. You can also still claim theFeed In Tariff – it’s a win- win situation. These systems are ideally suited to ruralsituations. Daniel adds: “the Feed intariff is due to be reduced in July so itsrecommended to make the most of thetariff at its present 21p a Kwh, which is upto £850 a year! Once you sign up to thescheme you are guaranteed yourpayments for 25 years!”Tel: 01274 816782 Mob: 07830 291253www.electrotect.co.uk

Someone else may strugglewith a disabling fear of driving, oruncontrollable, intrusive thoughts. Yetanother may live in a constant state oftension, worrying about anything andeverything.Anxiety is not just about emotionalfeeling but it is also about the physicalsymptoms as well, these includethings such as a pounding heart, sweating, stomach upset or dizziness, shortness of breath, tremors andtwitches, muscle tension, headachesfatigue and insomnia. The worst thing about this typeof illness is the anxiety attacks thatpeople suffer from which can oftenhave a huge impact on their daily livingSay you saw it in the Worth Valley Mag!29and how they function.Anxiety attacks, also known aspanic attacks, are episodes of intensepanic or fear. Anxiety attacks usuallyoccur suddenly and without warning.Sometimes there’s an obvioustrigger— getting stuck in an elevator, for example, but in other cases, theattacks come out of the blue.Anxiety attacks usually peak withinten minutes, and they rarely last morethan thirty minutes. But during thatshort time, the terror can be so severethat you feel as if you’re about to dieor totally lose control. The physicalsymptoms of anxiety attacks arethemselves so frightening that manypeople believe they’re having a heartattack. After an anxiety attack is over, you may be worried about havinganother one, particularly in a publicplace where help isn’t available or youcan’t easily escape.Again some of the more commonsymptoms of anxiety attacks include:a surge of overwhelming panic, feelingof losing control or going crazy, heart palpitations or chest pain, feeling like you’re going to pass out, hyperventilation, hot flushes or chillsand feeling detached or unreal. Finally there are six major typesof anxiety disorders, generalizedanxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsivedisorder, panic disorder (anxietyattacks), phobia, post-traumatic stressdisorder, and social anxiety disorder. In the next edition we will look at howto tackle anxiety with the use of someadvice on relaxation techniques.
