You will graduate with a degree from UNSW.Not only that, your training will have you primedfor a leadership role in whatever field you chooseto specialise in. You’ll know how to bring out thebest in others and have the scope to make decisions– all qualities in high demand by industry leadersaround the world.WE’LL PAY YOU TOSTUDY AT ADFAAt ADFA you will be paid to study for your degree. In yourfirst year you will receive a salary package <strong>of</strong> $38,153(excluding superannuation) which increases with eachyear <strong>of</strong> study. We will also take care <strong>of</strong> all your HELP fees(previously known as HECS), medical and dental careand subsidise your accommodation. You will then bepaid a salary package <strong>of</strong> more than $80,000 per yearafter you graduate and complete your specificemployment training.


THE ADFA EDUCATION AWARDIf you are currently studying Year 11, you could beeligible to apply for the ADFA Education Award.In recognition <strong>of</strong> leadership potential, and academicand sporting achievements, the most outstandingcandidates who apply for the ADFA EducationAward will be awarded a laptop computer.Should you be successful, there is no obligationto join ADFA. Conditions apply.FINDING THE BALANCEBETWEEN WORK AND PLAYWhilst training and studying at ADFA, you willlive on campus, however you do have spare timeto relax. ADFA is located in Canberra and <strong>of</strong>fersan enormous range <strong>of</strong> leisure, sporting and adventureactivities. There are opportunities to go skiing atThredbo, yachting from ADFA’s boat house onLake Burley-Griffin, hang-gliding or scuba diving.Then again, if you are looking for team sports,ADFA also <strong>of</strong>fers Australian Rules Football, rugbyunion, rugby league, netball, hockey, soccer,basketball and much more. ADFA also hasa well-equipped indoor sports centre, includingstate-<strong>of</strong>-the-art weights and cardio equipment,an indoor swimming pool and indoor and outdoorsports courts.In terms <strong>of</strong> on-campus facilities, you will find ADFA<strong>of</strong>fers banking, a bookshop, c<strong>of</strong>fee shop, dry cleaningand a hairdresser. The other big plus about ADFAis if you wish to go home in your mid year or end<strong>of</strong> year breaks, ADFA will pay for your travel coststwice per year.


WHAT ARE THE STEPS INAPPLYING TO JOIN ADFA?1. Enquiry / ApplicationTo enquire or apply for ADFA call 13 19 01 or visitdefencejobs.gov.au/<strong>adfa</strong>. You can book directly intoa Your Opportunities Unlimited (YOU) session that isheld at your local <strong>Defence</strong> Force Recruiting Centre.You will be sent application forms, which you will needto complete and bring with you to the session. As it isa competitive process, which can take up to 12 months,it is preferable that you apply in Year 11.2. Your Opportunities Unlimited (YOU) SessionAfter applying you will attend a YOU session at yourlocal <strong>Defence</strong> Force Recruiting Centre. This sessionwill provide you with information about ADFA andcareer advice from an ADF Careers Counsellor.To make sure you can handle the intellectual andtraining demands <strong>of</strong> ADFA, you will also undertakean aptitude test. An ADF Careers Counsellor willexplain what to expect.3. Assessment DayAfter the YOU session you will be booked intoan Assessment Day where you will undergo aPsychological Interview, a Medical Assessmentand a <strong>Defence</strong> Interview. Your ADF CareersCounsellor will contact you prior to the AssessmentDay to make sure you know enough about the joband the Service you hope to join.4. Officer Selection BoardThe Officer Selection Board (OSB) consists <strong>of</strong> a series<strong>of</strong> activities designed to test attributes like leadership,teamwork and other individual abilities consideredcritical to the role you have applied for. You will undergoa formal interview conducted by a panel <strong>of</strong> military


<strong>of</strong>ficers and a psychologist. The OSB activity comprises<strong>of</strong> a four-day trip to Canberra, which will include a tour<strong>of</strong> ADFA and the Australian War Memorial. Acceptanceinto ADFA is then dependent on your final Year 12results and successful admission into UNSW.5. University ApplicationOnce you make it through the OSB process, you willneed to submit an application to the UniversitiesAdmission Centre (UAC) in NSW, listing yourUNSW Canberra - ADFA degree as your numberone preference. If you are successful and meet theUNSW admission requirements, <strong>Defence</strong> ForceRecruiting and the Universities Admissions Centrewill contact you in relation to accepting your <strong>of</strong>ferinto ADFA. You will then need to advise <strong>Defence</strong>Force Recruiting <strong>of</strong> your intent to accept the <strong>of</strong>fer andcomplete an online acceptance process for UNSW.6. Fitness TestAll candidates who have received a Letter <strong>of</strong> Offerfor appointment or enlistment must undergo aPhysical Fitness Assessment (PFA) prior to entry.This includes the Multistage Fitness Test (or shuttlerun) to measure your aerobic capacity. The aim <strong>of</strong>the PFA is to determine if you are at a sufficientlevel <strong>of</strong> fitness to safely commence training.


ELIGIBILITYTo apply, you should be in at least Year 11 atschool, and undertaking a tertiary package or havecompleted Year 12 with an entrance rank that willqualify you for entry into UNSW. You must alsobe an Australian citizen or permanent resident<strong>of</strong> Australia.
