Education“Ve’shinantam L’vanecha…and you shall teach them toyour children.”This is our commandment fromGod to pass on the history, traditions, language and mitzvot of Judaism toour children. This summer I spenteight days in Germany with teachersfrom many different countrieslearning about the many and variedways this commandment is followed. Both Jewish and non-Jewish childrenall over the world learn about the Jewish religion and its richtraditions, and this includes the lessons of the Holocaust. We areso lucky. We live in a free society where everything is open andavailable to us, including the availability of Jewish teachers. Thereare many communities around the world who don’t have the sameluxuries that we have because there are no longer Jews living inthose places.“Ve’shinantam L’vanecha… and you shall teach them toyour children.”This commandment is my personal responsibility, and it isour collective responsibility as a community to make sure that ourchildren know about their heritage. I take this responsibility veryseriously and try to offer learners of all ages many varied typesof learning opportunities, and this will not change in the comingyear. We can belearners of ourheritage at any Both Jewish and non-Jewish childrenage, and Temple all over the world learn about theSinai will be Jewish religion and its rich traditions, offering many and this includes the lessons of theways for our Holocaust.adults to do thatthis coming yearthrough classes, trips, cooking, book groups, theater and more.“Ve’shinantam L’vanecha… and you shall teach them toyour children.”The connection with our teenagers is so very important to us.Our new Tichon Sinai teacher & SoSTY advisor, Emily Watson, will bring an exciting energy to our program. Our goal is for ourteens to feel connected to Temple Sinai, to feel at home and tospend time with friends here. In addition to the regular program, there will be a fall retreat and a number of trips throughout theyear.“Ve’shinantam L’vanecha… and you shall teach them toyour children.”We are all teachers and we are all learners. I am lookingforward to a very productive year of both teaching and learningtogether with all of you and with our incredible faculty.L’Shana tova u’metukaMay you have a sweet and happy new year.Melissa CohaviATTEN TION:Temple Sinai is pleased to be able to offer aFREE Kindergarten programin the 2013-14 school year!Temple membership is NOT a requirement, and anyonein the community is welcome to register their child. Please contact the temple office for more informationand registration forms. Wehave returned again to the Hebrew month of Elul. This is the seasondesignated to give us time to prepare for the Holidays. To be mosteffective in their impact upon us, the Holidays cannot simply be endured, they must be “engaged.” Use these coming weeks to look in the mirror,to forgive yourself for what you’re not proud of and to open up to thepotential of who you might yet be in the coming year, 5774. Cemetery Service atFairfield Memorial ParkOn Sunday, September 1 at 10:00am, Rabbi TelRavand Cantor Morgovsky will lead a brief service atFairfield Memorial Park. It has become our traditionto take this time before the High Holy Days toremember those we’ve loved and lost. And, whetheryour loved ones are interred at Fairfield or not, wehope you’ll join us for this service of prayer andthoughtful reflection.SINAI’S 8 th ANNUALSMOKIN’ BBQSunday, September 1511:00am to 1:30pmALL MEMBERS WELCOME!Have you been to theTemple Sinai website? If not … check it out, visit templesinaistamford.org.Our Trip to PhiladelphiaOn Thursday July 11, seventeen Temple Sinaicongregants were accompanied by Rabbi TelRav andEducator Melissa Cohavi to the American Museum ofAmerican Jewish History in Philadelphia. Eleven of thecongregants, myself included, took a large van underthe skilled driving of Rabbi TelRav. (The others drove thenight before). The drive there and back was comfortableand allowed for spirited conversation among all.The museum was engaging and insightful and providedan interesting perspective on being a Jew in America.Aside from being architecturally beautiful, the museumwas easy to navigate and I believe would be suitable forboth children and adults. While visiting the museum was in and of itself worth thetrip to Philadelphia, it was experiencing it with friends thatreally made the day. I would encourage anyone thinking ofparticipating in an Adult Ed. Program/event to do so. TheTemple Sinai Adult Education offerings can be viewed onthe temple website under the Scroll of Learning tab… takea look! The offerings are both comprehensive and varied. There is something for everyone. And knowing that youwill be learning and having fun with fellow congregantscompletes the overall experience. — Alan BarrVisit www.templesinaistamford.org for more information. ∫ 9
