Since it is able to get sufficientfood on the trees, it rarely <strong>com</strong>es downon the ground.Another well-known animal of Indiantropical rainforest is the elephant(Fig. 7.11). It has adapted to theconditions of rainforests in manyremarkable ways. Look at its trunk. Ituses it as a nose because of which ithas a strong sense of smell. The trunkis also used by it for picking up food.Moreover, its tusks are modified teeth.These can tear the bark of trees thatelephant loves to eat. So, the elephantis able to handle the <strong>com</strong>petition for foodrather well.
