When the sky is cloudy, yourparents insist that you carry anumbrella. Have you heard elders in yourfamily discuss the weather beforeplanning a family <strong>fun</strong>ction? You musthave also heard the experts discussingthe weather before the start of a game.Have you ever wondered why? Theweather may have a profound effect onthe game. It has a profound effect onour lives. Many of our daily activities areplanned based on the weather predictedfor that day. There are daily reports ofthe weather on the television andradio and in the newspapers. But do youknow what this weather really is?In this chapter, we will study aboutthe weather and climate. We will alsosee how different forms of life areadapted to the climate of their habitat.7.1 WEATHERIn Fig. 7.1 a sample of weather reportfrom a newspaper is given.We find that the daily weather reportcarries information about thetemperature, humidity and rainfallduring the past 24 hours. It alsopredicts the weather for the day.Humidity, as you might know, is ameasure of the moisture in air.68Fig. 7.1 A sample of a weather report from anewspaperActivity 7.1I wonder who preparesthese reports!The weather reports are prepared bythe Meteorological Department of theGovernment. This department collectsdata on temperature, wind, etc., andmakes the weather prediction.Cut out the weather reports of the lastweek from any newspaper. If you do notget a newspaper at home borrow fromyour neighbours or friends and copythese reports in your notebook. You canalso collect weather reports from alibrary. Paste all the cut-outs on a whitesheet or on a chart paper.Now record the information from theweather reports collected by you inTable 7.1. The first row is just a sample.Fill all the columns according to the datain the chart that you have prepared.SCIENCE
