The film tells the story of Yaki and Shaul, twoteenage brothers who share a strong, almost telepathic connection between them. The brother’s family issuffering from an overgrowing debt, which led to a deep depression of their father. The brothers feel that theycan’t just stand on the sidelines while their family falls apart. Up until now they were helpless but now withYaki’s enlistment to the army, like every other 18-year-old Israeli boy, he is given a rifle. This rifle gives thebrothers the power they need to act and from helpless teenagers they become men.DIRECTORS’ STATEMENTYouth depicts the texture of everyday life in Petah-Tikva, my home town, and shines a light on the Israeli middle-class,a population that is being eroded by recent government reforms and accelerated capitalism.One of the film’s notions is the denial inside the nuclear family. The film will adopt the brothers’ point-ofview,and so the viewers will see only half truths, just as the brothers see their unclear world.The brothers’ polarized state of being is visualized by the floors they must climb up and down – between thefrightened girl they are holding in the basement, and their family in the third floor. Up on top they’re good andpure, way down at the bottom they’re cruel and violent. And yet both actions go toward the same end, it’s onlythe means that differ.
